Took a trip up the road to Canyon this morning. Fished 7:00 - 11:00. Zip. Nada. No Fish. Two strikes (and miss) on a Spook real early then nothing. Not another hit the rest of the morning. With the water dropping fast it seems the bite has got a lot tougher. Tried some shakey head stuff and crankbaits. Nada. Both strikes were right next to shore on steeper broken rock main lake banks. Tough day. Hope this helps somebody where/how not to fish.

Hey Fish Inspector, I will be up Monday for a few days, hope I can do better than that! But I can't tell you how many days I've had like that on Canyon. At this time of the year, would think deep water will produce best. At least you found out what was NOT working.LOL

Was at the lake and tried to fish at least in the AM. Last tried Thurs AM and had the same luck on the shore line. Couple of little strike. Had one SM hit a SK red-eye shad bigger than than him. SM have no fear but did not find the mama or papa. Won't be at the lake for another 3 weeks but I am guessing the bigger fish are either deeper or up river. I tried some deeper water 20 - 25 ft with shaky head worm with not even a nibble.

If somebody finds some size let us know at least the depth and type of structure. I've seen some boats pounding the shore line early (1 ft to 20ft) but I'm guessin they are having the same luck I've had.

Oh well like I've said before I have seen some structure that's been under water to try when the lake is back to normal level.

Hope you guys get tighter lines than me.

Wug. Good luck out there. I tried some 25'-40' water with no bites although it may of been the spots. Fish the shallow topwater bite REAL early.
I have not fished by the dam yet, maybe try that area.

EHL. I think we had our shakey worms in the same area. No strikes for me. I guess I'll try drop shotting or a swim bait.
I did graph fish at the big island deep drop in about 25'-40' suspended but that's are hard fish to catch. I also graphed fish in 40'-50' flats off the bottom but that may of been cats.
Although, a 2lb cat would of made my day today.

Maybe the fish will adjust to the dropping water but I'm a thinking it may be slower until the lake temp starts to drop.

We went fishing at Canyon last Tuesday for a few hours and caught about 15 bass. Most of them were small but we did manage to catch a few keepers. The majority of the fish were caught on Flick Shakes around docks and Tx rig 7" worms on brushpiles in 20' of water.

Made a trip out this morning. First one in several weeks and I will say fishing has slowed dramatically, or at least for me. Looks like my luck has run out.

Caught a few fish today flippin big jigs in deep tree tops, maybe 1 would have kept. I fished from 10ft to 105ft today. I don't know if any fish are that deep, I think the thermocline is around 35ft but I fished deep anyway as there didn't seem to be any of any size shallower than 35ft. Biggest fish today was just over 2 pounds and it was a Guad. Thats the biggest one I have ever caught.

I was out there yesterday for a couple hours in the heat. Fishing is still pretty tough. I think the water dropping is making fish bunch up in shallow water. Only caught a couple fish yesterday, both right off the bank in approx 5 ft depth close to a ledge dropping into 18-20 ft. Both fish were on the same hardwood, which is weird. Have not caught much off wood out there, but there are balls of shad everywhere. I think this is scattering the fish a bit, but there hasn't been a reliable bite for me in a few weeks. I am going to make a trip this week. I am not launching until 8pm, and I plan on fishing till midnight. When it gets this hot, my experience tells me to hide from the heat and go while its dark. Most lakes like Canyon (with no grass) always get tough in the dog days of summer.

the next time i bass fish at canyon will be the day after the first real cold front. we made the trip to choke this weekend and even though we didn't catch a hog we caught lots of decent fish.

oh yeah and no skiers! only gators and bass boats.

Just bought a boat in March and Canyon Lake is our lake of choice. Haven't really done much fishing as tubing and cruising. I have a 2008 Deck Boat with a fishing platform on the front. Some of ya'll may have seen me out there, looks like a pontoon on steroids.

I'd like to hook up with some of ya'll that fish Canyon to learn the technique of fishing this lake. Your boat or mine. Let me know if you're interested and we can make some plans. I trailer my boat and normally put in at the Randolph AFB ramp.

I also fish Calaveras, usually do pretty well on the cats. Just installed my Lowrance 520c and still learning how to use it. Should be able to target reds and striper once I get it down.

See ya on the water,
SportFisher

If I were you I would stick with Calaveras. Went out last night from 7:30 till 9:45 and caught one fish. I will say I was fishing "new water" that I have not tried before, but this lake is absolutely terrible in the evenings right now.

I fished from 3-30 feet. Topwater, jig, tube and swimbait.

One bite and I caught it, about 1 lb smallie in 6 ft.

I would like to hear if anyone is having luck out there. I might try a morning bite and see what happens, otherwise my a$* is going to Choke. When the water temp goes back below 78 I will be back on Canyon.

Haven't tried Choke yet, pretty much a saltwater fisherman until I made the boat purchase and gas got closer to $4 a gallon.

Canyon is such a nice lake, I am going to have to give it a try. The good thing about Canyon is, if the fishing sucks, you can play and swim. I wouldn't swim in Calaveras and definately not Choke with the gators.

I'll have to rent me a Cabin at the Randolph side and test her out for a couple of days.

See ya on the water,
SportFisher

Canyon can be a really fickle lake.

I've had times where I could catch fish on most every trip, and that was stipers, whites, catfish and bass, then just when you think you have the lake figured out everything just changes, and the fish get lockjaw.

I'll admit I usually don't fish the lake this time of year mainly because of the boaters and skiers, but it gets tough, and I believe the fish find the deep water hideouts to get away from the traffic, and the heat.

Most lakes are slow this time of year, and the morning and evening bite only lasts for a short while when it does occur.

Canyon is not a good black bass fishery, however; from what I understand catfish and striper are plentiful. I've got a friend who will fish for catfish and he says you can catch them pretty much all over the lake, but better up towards the river.

I grew up going fishing in Sam Rayburn in east Texas. Now that I am all grown up, I haven't been fishing in a long time. I decided to get back into it and get my 4 year old son into as well. I know the great times I had with my dad and want him to have the same thing. Problem is that currently, I have NO boat. So I am stuck with shore fishing for now. I just moved to San Antonio and it seems that Canyon Lake is the best choice.

I'm not familiar with the area at all so I was wondering if anyone could suggest some areas and give me some tips on fishing these areas.

I also heard about Guadalupe River State Park but wasn't sure if that was a good place.

Let me know and I look forward to hearing from you guys.

Thanks.

fishinnb- Think I am going to follow your plan friday morning, probably bait a hole for some cats, then bass fish for about an hour. After that get the Dos Eques and chicken liver out.

Boggey,

You should head to Medina Lake. Especially if you will be bank fishing with your son. Search for Joe's Marina on the internet...it is near Medina Dam. There are multiple docks with boat slips that are great for fishing with kids. It is in the shade and I have heard they feed the fish there so it is easy to catch some. Though I wouldn't expect anything big. Probably alot of perch and small bass but it would be fun for your son.

I have always heard that it is a big hit with kiddo's.

I just returned from Canyon last night...fished in the morning starting about 6AM and the evenings 7:30 till dark stayed in the dam area Tuesday thru Thursday. Mornings were topwater time fish, they would start schooling 6:30 till 7:30 unless there was cloud cover and then it lasted longer. I threw Excaliber Spitting Image popper...unfortunately the fish were pretty small. Weddnesday the clouds hung around for an extra hour and I boated 15, with only 3 keepers after the topwater bite would end I would struggle. The only other baits were shakey head (watermelon) and Texasrig Pumpkin and I would scratch out a few more. The evenings shakey was only producer...but I would generally score a little larger fish than mornings. By 10AM...too hot to stay out of the water. Did alot of cruising looking where the locals were fishing, main lake points seemed most popular. We stayed at Lodge at Turkey Cove...I would recommend them to those looking to stay at the lake for a few days. Rain is needed badly, ramp at TurkeyCove #2 is going to close if lake level goes down much more.

That answered my question about the morning bite.

What depth did you find the shakeyhead bite? Much luck in the afternoons? It's been the dead sea for me in the afternoon.

well I had a change in plans. No Dos Equis in the fridge cry I brought the chum and catfish bait but never got around to getting my hands dirty. Put in at Boat ramp 2 and yep in about a week it will be a dry ramp. Started fishing about 830 AM the bite was slow but I have had worse days on Canyon. First bite I didn't set the hook very well and missed him. Guess that I just wasn't prepared to get bit that quickly with all the bad reports and all. Ended up catching 5 bass, 2 smallies, 1 Guadalupe, and 2 LMB. The bite slowed after 10 am but the last fish caught was at 1230. All the bass were caught on T-rigged soft plastics. It was a hot day but not a bad one.

I was in a blue/white Ranger, but there were some guys staying at Turkey Cove in a new Z9 Nitro (red and yellow). I was fishing Overlook and the point toward the dam at the mouth of Turkey Cove(a ledge really). A few fish came from 15-25' and right around sunset they were shallow on the the drop off. I never really established a real pattern on the depth. many times I never really felt a bite, just heaviness on the line. I did graph schools of shad around 10'-15'....so my guess is the depth you see the shad is the depth to fish. IMO No smallies this trip and one 14" Guadalupe(came on watermelon-shakeyhead). Oh well, will be back this fall...C'mon rain!

Hey Cougar, they caught a few fish but were pretty tight lipped about where they were fishing...I know it wasn't around the dam or Overlook. That point, I caught a few on either side of it. One fish, I threw as far as I could picking a loop out of my spinning reel, over those submerged trees, and when I was reeling it up...there he was, already munching on my Zoom pumpkin t/r worm. Good topwater spot; schoolin in the area early...1-17"( all head skinny body). Talked with the brother of the Nitro owner...boat was 50K.

I saw those guys out there in the Z-9 on tuesday. I was in the green/white nitro. Those guys were running ALL OVER the lake. I figured they never really found a good mess of fish since they never stayed in one place very long.

I really stayed in those two areas the whole week....I knew there were fish there. Catching them was a different story! I moved one morning to fish near the Holiday ramp (#1?) and no bites. Cruised near the islands ( island and penisula) looking but that was about it. I am sure we will make another trip in the fall up to Canyon.

I was out there today from 10 to 4 and i will say the mid day bite is gone. We got skunked. had 1 bite all day and it came on a swim bait. It was in a small cove that had the clearest water I have ever seen on Canyon. Also had 3 more followers but no takers.

Thats it for me and Canyon until Thanksgiving at least or if the water levels start coming back up. Think I'm gonna head to Lake Bastrop to boost the confidence and rip up the thumbs.

I wouldn't be so fast to go to the trop right now. I was out there a week ago and the bite had slowed considerably. only 4 slot fish the with 8 hours on the water and my partner got the goose egg. Check out Austin bass fishing forum to see that latest reports out there.

Yea, I visit ABF often. I know the Trop pretty well. I use to fish it 2 to 3 times a week. I set a brush pile about 40 yards behind, and about 20 yards to the left of you in that picture.. directely under those power lines on that ledge.

That is what I have seen on the depth finder. I have caught more fish off that point the last 10 years than any other spot.

well, i got out very early this morning to give it a go. The lake was dead calm this morning. Pretty sunrise! White bass were schooling and busting up on the surface ALL OVER the lake. They were not really what I was after, but when they started busting up all around my boat, I had no choice but to catch some. I think I caught 12 or so with one double.

Bass fishing remains VERY slow. I caught 2 on a worm....dinks. I threw a topwater early and caught 2 sunfish.

I think I am done with canyon until conditions change.

Any day fishing beats blah blah blah. That cliche holds no water when you're talking about Canyon and $4 gas prices.

Choke Canyon here I come!!! Maybe Dunlap on a Friday or Saturday night!

Oh, and BTW..thanks for the report Hendo. You've just reassured me how the fishing out at Canyon is, although it sounds like you kinda tore them up for Cnayon standards.

Heard the rain is coming down hard. Comal got closed, street closers and the rivers are rising. Hope Canyon comes up.

Stogie,

just got back from Canyon, water temp. was consitantly 82.3. Fished from the dam all the way to Potters Creek.

1 LM that was close to keeper, and thats it on a Rattle Trap. Bites are hard to find out there right now.

I hope I live long enough to see them make fishing a priority or a least put forth a serious effort, to stock this lake and bring fisherman here from all around.
