went out for a few hours last thursday. caught 3 fish...biggest one was maybe 1.5 lbs at best. pretty slow... we were up in the trees at the south bosque. all 3 were caught with a shallow diving crank bait...and in the first 30 min or so. my brother was using a wacky worm with zero results. the depth finder had fish all over it but it didnt help us get fish in the boat. there were a ton gar all around us.. and a few whites hitting the surface here and there but again nothing major to report..

Alligator gar?
I am in Killeen, and I plan on trying for alligator gar up there on the Brazos in Waco. I am not that familiar with the Brazos and Waco.
Where can I put a boat in up there? Can I get a 16' bass boat in there or do you reccomend I bring the aluminum V-bottom?
Jeff

Caught 60+ over the last couple of days. Mostly dinks but some good ones mixed in with them.

my96,
i dont know of any boat ramps on the brazos in waco, but im sure there is. i know there is a "lake brazos", which is basically the river channel widened out for a mile or so. however, that area is notorious for skiers and power boat traffic. if you can find access near the brazos at hwy 6 then you should get into them good, that area looks real nice. do some internet searches for river access, or try using google earth maps and look for what appears to be boat ramps. i would use the alumnimum, you may have to cross a sand bar or 2.

There used to be a ramp somewhere out towards Mart/Marlin area but I don't think it's there anymore.

cameron park east to be exact. it is where the brazos and bosque rivers meet. aslo where they hold the power boat races are held. you can only go as far as the baylor baseball field due to the low water dam there...

Brazos and HWY 6... I will see what I can find.
Stillhouse and Belton are getting old to me. I never catch much out of them. Granted, I dont really know the hot spots but I have fished all over both of them with little to no luck. I need to get out more, somehwere different.
I got another reel for some gar action. I got a vintage Penn 209. Soon as it gets here I will go buy another big game rod to mount it on.
YYZ,
If I put in in cameron park, will that get me access to the gar spots?

I've also seen people put in boats where the turn around on loop 340 is. Don't ask me how they do it.

my96z,
i have not been on the brazos in awhile to be honest with you.. but there are some nice size gar in the north and south bosque rivers on lake waco along with hog creek. we were white bass fishing this spring with minnows when a 5 foot gar took it and ran with it...got a very good look at it as it snapped my 4 lbs line
