The cuz and I are planning a 3-day weekend at Falcon in mid-August. Although we are from south Texas and have both been to Zapata before, we arent sure about the best place to stay. Any suggestions on somewhere we can stay close to the lake?

Not necessarily looking for the best price, but a nice/convenient place to stay.

Thanks,

Stay at Becon Lodge. Speedy is a great guy. Make sure you have plenty of water, and cool clothes. I used to fish Falcon in July, August, and it was the hottest I have ever been. It felt just like a blow dryer blowing on you all day.

Oso Blanco is a good place to stay also. We stayed there in 07 and was happy with the rooms.

Don't forget to get some breakfast taco's from Stripes, they are GREAT!

I just got back from Falcon, we stayed in the cabins at Beacon, they are 60 bucks a night out the door, not bad since you boat is right next to you and there is a good ramp on site.

Beacon is also the furthest out of town and I believe the only one thats not on 83. Hence not as much traffic viewing your things. I have been told for more than ten years by a man who use to write the sporting report for the Zapata paper. He always said Speedy is the man for Falcon.

Well in my opinion you took Beacons off the list when you said nice, thank god you didnt say clean also! Been the 3 times hoping it will get better, never does. sorry jmho. They are close to the lake and hve a nice ramp if its still in the water.

Another vote for Oso Blanco. Have stayed at most of the places down there. OB has my business.

Oso Blanco has been under new ownership I think for the last year. Roberto Ramos is a very nice man and he is very fisherman friendly. He has old towels outside by each room to wipe down your boat. More importantly there is a restraunt next door that has good food, a bar and you don't have to drive anywhere. You can also launch your boat behind the hotel when the lake is up.

Beacon is nice however you have to drive in to town for dinner. I stay at Beacon when I fish up the lake and Oso when I fish down lake. Good luck!

If you stay @ Beacon, make sure you get a cabin! The other rooms are a mess and not very clean. I avoid Beacon now!

Lakefront Lodge are clean and for the money not bad. They also have a ramp.

Have to say that Oso Blanco would get my vote over Beacon also. Speedy's never around there anymore and the place has slipped a little bit.

Falcon Heights down by the dam, I'll be there in mid August as well. Good price, clean, away from the crowd, and great place to hang out w/ friends (covered outdoor patio w/ brick stove)

Beacon is [censored]

stay at Oso

edit: didn't know c-r-a-p would be censored. Ironically the word that should go there to describe some parts of Beacon would be censored!

We stayed in the tralier at Beacon, it was not horrible. Oso is worth the extra 10

Okay man, here is the real skinny. Before you pick a place to stay, you need to call around and find out what lake level they are capable of still launching at. It would SUCK to stay in Zapata, and have to drive to and from the state park every day. I believe Beacons ramp is out of commission below 261', but i may be off a few feet. Just a little heads up for ya.

I agree on the new owner of Oso being a good guy. He really tries to cater to the fisherman. Here is the phone # if interested 956-765-4339.

another thumbs up for Oso, my son and I stayed there a few weeks back, clean rooms and Cold AC, thought it was very reasonable. Fished with Charlie Haralson, a fantastic guide. We talked to some guys staying @ the Beacon, the way they talked it had gone downhill , no clean towels , etc.
don't know the name of it but there is a hole in the wall mexican food place about 2 blocks east of the police station,
best mexican food I've ever eaten

If you don't mind going across the border, Carlos, who owns Falcon Heights Motel, and his brothers have an extremely nice lodge across the border. Has a game room, nice pool, nice breeze way with chairs to hang out, and they will cook all your meals for you if you arrange it.

Nice place. You have to call Carlos for details.

Oh - and they lock the gate at 10pm. Nothing in or out. This way your stuff stays safe.

HA! You are probably right, but my cousin and I are both very busy people and this is about the only time we can find to get down there. Hunting season is right around the corner, and that is our LIFE from Sept-Feb. Besides, we are from south tx, so we should be at least semi-used to it.

Thanks for everyone's input. Looks like its Oso Blanco as I dont think either one of us wants to stay in a dump!

Just hope the fishing is as good as the advice!

The nicest rooms are going to have to be at the Holiday Inn Express suites. This has become my new chain provided you dont smoke/No smoking rooms only. Cleanest rooms I have found anywhere.......
