OK tamale,
It's time to share...with all the talk about small fish at Canyon on this forum, you are going to have to share what type of bait is producing a 9 and a 6 and others that are 3 to 4.

I'm just getting lucky. But I like Canyon! I'm not driving down to Choke nearly as much anymore.

I seem to recall having read that releases of water from Canyon are critical to certain bay estuaries. I suppose it could be argued that the fish dependent on these estuaries are more "natural" than the stripers and Florida-strain largemouth stocked in Canyon. As for trout, the last time I had occasion to look into it, Texas Parks and Wildlife was making it clear that they had no intention of developing the Guad as a trout fishery. The trout they release, as I understand it, are expected to be caught immediately.

Everyone blames the TPWD, but in reality, it's the Guadelupe Blanco River Authority that seems to favor the trout fishery, that signed a contract with Trout Unlimited in order to maintain acceptable water flow to sustain the fishery. As for the outfitters, tubers, and bay estuaries are concerned, they seem to be only beneficiaries of the agreement between GBRA and GRTU. http://www.grtu.org/grtu_temp_profile.html

its all politics anyway. i guess as long as theres enough water to cast into i'll be happy.
hey tamale, if you see a boat following you it'll be me. i know there's good fish in there, but i've never caught any bass bigger than about 3 lbs. maybe operator error!
i know a couple of the guys that fish the wed tournaments, but since they closed mcqueeney, and dunlop has got that nasty spinach looking funk in it, i couldn't piss money away to fish canyon.lol

THere are good fish in there. So far this year I have also pulled a 6 1/2 and 2 years ago a buddy of mine pulled one out that was just over 7. Our 3 biggest fish have all came from the same spot.

Went up to Canyon today with my g/f. We launched my old boat (1971 Sidewinder W/1956 Mecury 35 HP)at public boat ramp #11 off of Tanglewood. There was only one other truck in the parking lot and it didn't have a trailer. I was thinking we'd have the river all to ourselves!! But as soon as I got the boat under way the steering cable steering block broke in back. I managed to get back to the ramp and jerry rigged it. We started out again and it was just not working well, no positive control so we turned back rather than risk wrecking the boat. As we were heading back the throttle cable broke. Not sure if it's in the lever housing or in the cable sheeth. At any rate we managed to limp back to the boat ramp and put her on the trailer with no more problems. We decide to go to Craines Mill pier and do a little fishing anyways. We were there for around 2 hours and only caught one small perch. Not a very sucessful day but as least I wasn't at work!!! I've been up to Canyon several times over the past couple of years and I've never caught a decent fish. I've tried plastics, crankbaits, spoons, spinners, live bait (both minnows and worms). I'm sure they're there, I just haven't had the time to look for them. I'm hoping in a couple of weeks we'll be able to get out with our new kayaks. Hopefully we'll have better luck then exploring some of the smaller creeks and coves. Steve

There are some decent fish. I have caught approx. ten fish over 4lbs out of there this year. I agree, this is nothing compared to Choke, Amistad and Falcon. But for being right down the road it's not bad, especially during the winter when the ski bologna is absent.
My best 5 fish stringer here went 18lbs, and that was in three hours of fishing. The lake fishes small, so once you find a spot, milk it dry. I think most guys are either throwing too small of a bait. If you throw a decent sized topwater out there, you will catch some good fish.

i couldn't really say. I threw a lot of stuff at em....topwater-got a few early, crankbaits-got a few, worm-was probably the best, but I also used it the most so....
wind really kicked up after 10 and i left. plus the lake lice were out in full force.
