Lowe FS165 2006 90hp Mercury 2 stroke 55 minnkota trolling motor, pirhana depth finder cover swing-away tongue clear button-in plastic cover to fish in inclement weather bimini top, cd player, 2 live wells, like new. Can someone tell me if 17500 is too much to pay. Used 4 times by an elderly man whose wife is ill. He bought it new locally. They had it listed at 19K on consignment.

That's a lot to pay for a used boat with a 90 on it. Trust me, you can do better and probably save $5,000. Here are some examples: Skeeter Triton Another Skeeter Those are just some random examples. I am not saying they are great deals or not because I dont know. I'm just saying you can get more boat for less money.

Offer him 1/2 of his asking price, if he says "no" - them just walk away. As others have said, you can find other and better deals and get a 18' or longer.

Go to the NADA Book and see what it's listed as.

There are several things to consider here. When you put a boat on consignment you agree to take a certain price for the rig. The dealership then puts a high price on it to give them some negotiating room. They are there to make a profit not sell that guy's boat for him.
I looked this rig up on nadaguides.com and got an average retail value of $12,560 with it being listed with a 60 hp motor. I checked the 60 hp value to the 90 hp value. There is a difference of $1270 in the two motors.
That makes the average retail value of the rig come to $13,830. You can add a few bucks for near newness or subtract a few bucks for "been setting around a lot". Either way this rig is way over priced and the dealership is looking to make a bundle off of it.
My guess is the owner is probably willing to take a lot less than $13,830 but you have a dealership standing between the two of you.

See, that's what I mean. The last 2 posts by C-Man is a perfect example of what you can have for that kind of money. Take your time and look around because a couple of days after you buy one there will be a newer, nicer, faster, with a bigger motor, better electronics show up for sale at a lower price.

My guess is the owner is probably willing to take a lot less than $13,830 but you have a dealership standing between the two of you. Have you considered that the issue is probably more along the lines of the guy walked into a dealership, found a boat he liked and purchased it. He financed it for as long as the bank would allow (12-15 years) and put no money down on it. Now he's trying to sell it 2 years into a 12-15 year loan. Is that really the dealers fault the man has a payoff he's having to deal with? Keep in mind that most boats for sale thru a dealer will sale for what the book says they are worth. Boats for sale by owner mean he's probably got a payoff he's dealing with. Payoff has no correlation to a boats value. Consignment fees typically run 10% of sale price and are not a secret. The difference in the boat selling for 13,000 and it selling for 19,000 is $600 to the dealer. I wouldn't consider that "a dealing trying to make a bundle". We often have boats for sale on consigment and realize it always reflects bad on the dealership when the boats are priced high. But like most things in life, things are always as they first appear. Try and tell a guy who owes the bank $18000 on a boat that it's only worth $13000. Again, the dealer becomes the bad guy.

Triton has those on sale right now for $16,995 brand new! And it comes with a 90 HP engine! Forget that Lowes. That is way too much money for an used Aluminum boat. Seriously, look at the Triton Explorer 18. It really is a nice boat for the money.
