I was fishing by 7am and catching by 7:15, Sandies were schooling again behind the Gaylord Lot of dinks for the other boats however I was catching less but with more size. I was throwing a 1 1/2oz chart. slab when the fish died down over there I went back to the same area as last week and had the same results but once again I was catching better size. I'm sure there is a name for this location but I do not know it: it is in open water (40-15ft deep) on the opposite side of the lake from the island and is near two big points. Hope this helps caught lot of keepers I kept 12 and thanks again for the tip there Luck of the Irish.
P.S. i also caught a 37in channel cat which i threw back, talk about a surpise!

Jon, are you talking about the feeder creek back behind the marina? A 37in channel? Are you sure it wasn't a blue? I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news. Lake record is..... Catfish, Channel 5.50lbs 23.75in on Dec 31, 2007 by Jered Mounger on shad. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/fish/action/waterecords.php?WB_code=0320

Do you remember if it had a big tail that was split like a fork? i.e., a really sharp V

P.S.
I've seen a little talk lately about fishing behind the Gaylord. Just a FYI to all who venture back that way. It's been a while since I've been back there but as I remember; past the bridge there is a concrete wall that is just under water. Traveling towards the back of that cove, stick to the left. That is where that concrete wall is busted and you can get through without scratching your boat or breaking something else.

thanks for the heads up, and as for the tail sounds about right, it did not really strike to that much different than any other tail,

never fished behind the gaylord but sounds like it worked for you. I've got my favorite 3 or 4 spots and generally can get on sandies in the summer at one of those spots. Might not be huge ones but we do pick up the occasional chunk along with alot in the 1 pound range. Only thing that will mess us up saturday is too much wind. HOpefully we will have light winds this weekend.

There are three dams back there. 1 you can see at the very back above water. 2 the concrete before the bridge is the spillway for the one that runs from the rocky shore to the far side at about a 45 degree angle. 3 Is the point that juts out as you go down the side of the Marina strait across to the parking lot for the marina. Also did you know there was a fishing barge behind what is the marina now? Sank in the flood of Oct. 1981.

Enjoyed fishing beside you most of the day. We certainly caught a lot of dinks today. From the Gaylord Launch area to Murrel Park. We were in the red Ranger, visited with you a few times today. You in the smaller boat by yourself?
It was fun catching fish amongst the ducks this morning. I've only seen that a couple of other times on Lewisville and RC. Those ducks were killin" shad as fast as the Sandies were.
We finally caught a few sizable fish on a swing back towards Murrel this morning about 10:30. Kept a dozen or so. Our larger fish came on large topwater baits. I think we just got into a school of bigger fish. They weren't up long but it was fun.
For the first time on Grapevine in a long long while it was a great trip this morning, lots of fish just way too small overall. Maybe that will change soon???
I thought perhaps that was "Luck of the Irish" on the water with us this morning but wasn't sure enough to bother him. His daughter is one of my band students. I don't know if there is a child who is more proud of her daddy and the job that he does. It is a frequent conversation between the two of us. She's a good kid.

Well I went back out tonite and Didn't catch a darn thing, my g/f did she pulled out 3 sandies. I'm kinda a one trick pony right now, When I see the fish I can do pretty well but when I fish a hump my catch rate goes way down, I pretty much fish the same way, I throw slabs, tail spins and that about it. I was wondering if there is anything else I can do to be more successful, such as, boat position or should I vertically slab or cast it out, thanks again for ya'll help.
Hey I was going to ask if ya'll were from the forum, very cool, hope to see ya'll out there again. my name is john give me a shot.
Oh by the way that little boat that you saw the "green beast" well it had ankle deep water when I loaded it tonite. If y'all did not hear it rained and it got pretty nasty real quick. My g/f was freakin out, she thought the boat was going to sink, lol. But seriously it was pretty nasty out there well at least for that little boat. She won't forget that trip. lol.

Sometimes blues can be almost white, but also channels don't always have spots. There's a good diagram on the TPWD website compairing the two. They are easy to confuse because they are so similar. The blues also have a slight hump by their top fin. I guess the best way to tell is the difference in the anal finns, shape and number which is given on the TPWD website. No matter what it was it was a nice catch. Here's the webpage from TPWD on the differences between channel/blue. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/catfish_diagrams.phtml
