my youngest brother is returning from Iraq in a few days and is going to artesia to visit another brother. I know he would like to some fishing while he is out there. I've never been so I don't even know what he could fish for. If anyone has some suggestions on what he needs to take that would be great. Im sending him off with a 3 wt and possibly a 5 at but I don't know what flies

Call that other brother, ask him what the local fly shops are in the area. Someone will know. Get in touch with them, outline what's up and I bet they'll get you pointed in the right direction!

he doesn't fish and I'm not sure he would even know what a fly shop is. Oh well, I'll start searching

Oops! Well, I tried Googling it but there were no shops, that I saw anyway, in Artesia proper. I bet that there are several nearby.

If all else fails send him with the standby's. Prince nymphs, pheasant tails, midges, parachute adams, adult caddis, and a few attractors like royal wulfs and yellow humpys. Once he arrives he should be able to find more info if not at a shop then try the regulars at the local watering hole. (and if that fails you have a ready made plan B)

rhyme, you've obviously never been to artesia. Not much there. He is in the oil field. Tells me he works about 100 hours a week. I'll figure something out. I'm thinking I should send him with the kitchen sink.

The Penasco River at Mayhill is great, and not too far from Artesia. Charlie Mulcock has day fee fishing and a good stretch of river.

The Pecos River runs right through Artesia and into Brantley Lake State Park. That looks promising. And the Penasco River looks promising for cold water species.

On further investigation, he may not have what it takes fish Rio Penasco, but I may have to make a visit to the Artesia brother--not that my casting is any better.

I dunno how I missed this. I work and fish out of Artesia on a weekly basis. The only real fly fishing is going to be a Charlie Mulcock's ranch. He's gonna want the 5 wt at Charlie's. Charlie also has fly for sale for his stream. He will need leaders and tippets, usually 4 to 5X. Go here
http://www.pvtnetworks.net/~chuck1/ and call Charlie and visit with him about your brother. Charlie is a good guy and so are you for sending your brother. As a vet myself, that is a great thing you are doing.
