We were at Texoma enjoying some boating this weekend ourselves. When we were at Highport Marina, I saw a trout between 2-3 pounds caught!

I didn't realize there was any trout in the lake! I went over to the guy who caught it fishing off his slip, and sure enough, it was really a trout! I couldn't believe my eyes.

I guess they stocked it, or migrated down out of Oklahoma. Does anyone know about trout being in Lake Texoma?

Was it a brown or rainbow? Brown trout can tolerate considerably warmer water than rainbows and some of the lakes I fish in Arkansas and Missouri support a few trout in the deeper waters near their dams.

Wish you had a photo for the exact species ID - I don't doubt you for a moment that it was a trout, as I've seen enough fishing oddities for myself.

Jack, believe it or not, we didn't have a single beer while out on the boat.

I wouldn't have believed it either but sure nuff, it was a trout! I've caught plenty of them over the years to know what it was. I just wished I had a camera. Being on the water, we left ours at the hotel.

I wouldn't have thought it either. But having caught many, many species of fish in North America, including most species of trout...after seeing it, I still can't believe it. I don't know if it migrated down the lake from Oklahoma, or was transplanted there.

FYI ....
The upper limiting, near lethal water temperature for brown trout
is 27.2 C = 80.96 F, at which naturally reproducing, viable populations would not be maintained.

I saw a guy exclaim that he had caught a trout too, and it was at the Wright Patman dam/spillway. He tried to give it away. Don't know if he kept it or not. I did not get a good look at the fish because I was too far away. That was very unusual too. I guess it sure can happen!

JD, first of all thanks for the awesome day of fishing on Friday! That was great.

I know what a skipjack is and no, it wasn't a skipjack.

This is exactly what the fish looked like that I saw. I was literally 2-3 feet from the fish when I was looking at it.

Here is a picture of the fish I saw.

http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10364_18958-45650--,00.html

Lake dwelling brown trout are a wary lot. They hide in shallow water weed beds and rocky, boulder-strewn areas, and prefer a water temperature of 65-75 degrees F.

It came out of about 17-20 foot of water at Highport. So the water temp at that depth is in the lower 70's if the surface temp is in the lower-mid 80's.

Mike:

I caught several browns this last week in Colorado. If that looks like the fish, then it certainly was a brown trout. Working with TP&W on netting surveys, I can say that lots of odd and different fish are occasionally brought to the surface. You would not believe the aquarium fish that have been released and flourish in many waters????, some of them you don't want to stick your fingers in their mouth????

Tim, I suggested that he call TPWS. I had family waiting so I couldn't stick around. I saw it as we were going by, turned around, and went up to the boat house and pulled broadside from the guy. There were two other people there scratching their heads going dunno... I knew it was a trout instantly and didn't know of any stockings.

Wow that would be kinda odd. Lake Altus stocks trout below the dam every year, dont know if it would have come from there or not. But I guess it could be possible. Last year when the water was going over the spillway and the gates were open with the river running good there was some stripers that made there way up here. Had to be from Texoma. They werent hybrids or sand bass, actual stripers. Wonder if the two lakes are trying to trade fish. I think Altus stocks rainbows but not positive if that is the only ones it stocks. I haven't fished for them in years. Who knows anythings possible....

There is a small mouth bass record on Ray HUbbard and TP&W has no idea how it got there.

Maybe it was caught in Tishomingo. He was using it for bait, and the ploy was to make everyone think he just caught it (???).

between the spoonbills, oversized bluecats, walleye and smallies...given the lake is on average 7-10 degrees cooler in the winter than most other Texas lakes and the fact that Michael says it - I beleive it! thumb
