Catfishing near Fort Worth...

I have been traveling to Tawakani to some spots a friend told me about, but the drive is about 2 hours for me. With the price of gas, I really can't afford to get out as often as I would like. I am not asking anyone to give out any 'honey holes' or anything, but if anyone could direct me to a few spots in the Fort Worth area where I could catch some cats, I would be appreciateive. I can only fish from shore, and usually fish with my 11 year old son.
I would be grateful for any information that anyone would like to give me.
Also, I fish with shad.. whole shad.. small.. thread it on.. as they are usually dead anyway.. Other thoughts on bait? A newbie to catfishing can get a bit overwhelmed with the bait selection by reading all of the posts I have read..
Thank you...

Jake,
Never been to Tawakani ,so, nothing I can offer in terms of best bank fishing spots. But as far as bait, since I am new to catfishing as well, I have tried chicken liver, shrimp, shad, punch bait ( both DK and Secret-7), perch, etc. Seem to me , fresh cut shad is the best, I caught some big size cat using shad, the smaller ones seem to prefer chicken liver and shrimp. Just my experience, I think it also kind of depend on the lake.

I've had great luck on Grapvine lately in shallow water near brush piles on wind blown banks. I've used both cut bluegill and dead shad with about equal results.

Grapevine has some pretty good kittys. Usually around the Marshall creek and Denton Creek inlets is pretty good. Lewisville has some good sized kittys in it in the Little Elm area there are some fair places to bank fish. You might try in the Bank fishing section for some specific places. Also Eagle Mountain but I've never fished for kittys there. You can also try live goldfish, and if you ever catch a buffalo filleted buffalo is good bait. Sometimes you can get buffalo in some of the Mexican marketplaces and grocery stores. Cut shad is hard to beat. Hot dogs cut up, shrimp, cocktail wennies, and punch bait for channels if you don't mind it getting on everything. Best of luck.

Lake Arlington can be good at eather of the public boat ramps on the east side of the lake. Mineral Wells state park and Lake Weatherford are good to once you figure the lakes out.

Thanks fellas.. I'll have to look around some more... Considering that 100% of the fish occupy 50% of any given lake.. it can be tough to find them on these big lakes without a little help. Just me a lone I got the patience to put in my time.. but it is tough with the kid.. so I appreciate the help.
JR2946 ... I can only afford to go every couple of weeks... but it is a great lake.. I go to some campground off of 276... pretty productive spot..been looking to try some other spots as well...

jake, we usually go to Anchor Inn, there is some deep water off the bank but it is kind of far out. you can hit it when the water is down. We wear wadders and walk it out. At night we fish closer to the bank, 15-20 ft out. I threw my cast net out the other day about 2ft from the bank and caught a 3lb fish, threw him back, its illegal. this is a good spot during the winter. We do alright there all year long.

Can I take you up on the info Sac... I live about 7 minutes from Benbrook and would love to find a few spots there... If I could get my 11 year old and my 4 year old on some fish without torturing them with a 2 hour drive.. I would be their hero lol..

Jake sac is right there are some decent sopts on Benbrook, just have to find em.. There is a spot off of old Grabury road ..You have to park and walk some though proly about half a mile down a gravel road but it is owned by the army corp. of engineers not sure which way you are coming in from the west or the east but take a left at railroad tracks if you are coming from the west right at rocky creek boat storage. right if you are coming from the east at the same rilaroad tracks . the spot is about 2 or 3 miles down you will see a spot on the side of the road to park.. It does not look like much but there are some nice channels down there caught about 18 the other night in 2 hours time on dip bait and shad.. There are lots of turtles and lots of snags as well. You can catch a ton of yellow hoppers a long the walk as well caught a couple on those as also.. Good luck..

Man I took my 11 year old daughter to that spot last night the water is really low and we ony caught a few but she caught a really sweet 8 pound channel .. I caught a couple of dinks and lost a bunch of hooks .. There are som big rocks and tree roots in that hole. But it is worth it for the quality fish that are in it..I will try to figure out how to put up up that pic.. I can tell you if you come down old granbury road you will come to rocky creek boat storage you can only go right or left at thr RR tracks one way takes you to rocky creek park the other takes you to the spot, it is the second clearing on the left.. then you gotta walk a bout half mile or so down a gravel road.Sonnys dip kills them there and sometimes shad works but DKs has not ever got me anything down ther.. Good luck watch out for the snakes as well..
