Went out last night from 6:30 till dark. Just about the toughest trip I can remember. The lake is dropping, and looks to have dropped approx 5-7 feet already/ water temp approx 83. Fished mostly main lake points and ledges, ended up with four fish total. Fish look to be suspended on the graph. Tried everything from topwater to drop shot, with only fish being caught on shakey head, moved at a snails pace. Would like to know if anyone is having much luck out there right now. I typically have better luck in the morning this time of year but, the afternoon bite normally isn't this bad.

Hey Timberlake, I am going to Canyon on 7/14 for a few days...staying at Turkey Cove. Thanks for the report! I guess we could use a buttload of rain to get lakes back to normal and the fish turning on a little. Did you see any schools of shad on the graph? I am not sure which is slower topwater fishing or shakey head(which I like to do). What topwaters are you using...I stink at "walking the dog". wug

I saw a few schools bunched up on the graph. Seemed like most of them were in 10-15 ft. I have better luck on poppers than I do on spook type baits out there. But, the topwater bite seems to be pretty weak in the afternoons right now. It was great about a month ago.

When Timberlake has a tough day at Canyon, the fishing was off that day. The morning topwater bite has been pretty good, on Spooks.

The lake will be packed with nuts this weekend.

It's not so much the lack of rain, because the lake dropping is being helped by an agreement having to do with the trout below the dam.

There was a news clip last week saying they were going to increase the flow to try to keep the trout fishery from being hurt by the slow flows of late, and the tubers also benefited as the well as the outfitters down stream from the dam.

The fishing is usually bad when a lake is dropping, and with the increased flow it's probably dramatic for the fish, and enough to give them lockjaw!

Went out yesterday morning and caught 5 in thirty minutes. I was on the water by 610. Topwater was the lure but as soon the sun came up. They turned off like a switch. I managed two more fish on a jig and trailer. the big fish of the day was a 8lber. To bad it was a flathead. I thought I hooked into a lake record. I fought it for 5 minutes. I fish with 10lb test. I was done fishing at 10.

its amazing that they will drain that lake for a few trout fisherman downstream. i'm all for the trout stocking, but the shouldn't be able to drain the lake because a non native species can't survive.

whats really crazy is all the water the let out since last summers rains. now the river is shallow and the lake is coming down with no real rain in sight.

I am not all for the trout stocking. I'll probably catch hell for saying it, but oh well. If those 22,000+ fish stocked were bass or catfish at least they would have a chance to survive and replenish the fishery.

I go to alaska to fish for salmon not catfish or large mouth bass. I wouldn't expect alaska's fish and game to stock catfish bass in their waters for summer months. That would be ridiculous. If people want to catch trout, go where there are trout. Just my opinion.

I don't have any reports or newsclips but just thinking that the river does not stop at NB but goes to the gulf. They may be using the water down south for some irrigation??? Friend of mine with a farm in Cuero says his place is getting cracks in the ground and has to watch his cows.

What a difference a year makes with the water.

Yesterday morning I went out around 6:30 and caught two keeper size and 3 fish who thought they ought to be keepers. Toss them all back for another day or give them a chance to grow bigger for another trip. Mostly early on top water topedo then switch to shaky head worn and then trap over ledge drops. Gave up about 10 am. Looks to my graph that there are a lot of suspended fish out there. I just haven't figured out how to get a bite. If anybody get it figured out let the rest of us in on the key presentation.

I'm not all for the trout stocking either, and a long while back I gave my opinion, and pretty much upset several people with my negative comments, so I'll just let it go.

Those outfitters downstream from Canyon depend on the flow of the river to attract the crowds and they seem to have a lot of clout also when it comes to getting water realeased from the lake.

I guess the Corps is counting on a tropical storm to replinish the lake, because that is exactly what it will take, and they are gun shy from what happened a few years back when the lake went over the spillway and washed out that gourge, along with a bunch of those homes downstream, in New Braunsfels.

certainly better to err on the side of caution. the outfitters have alot of pull, but they have had several bad summers in a row.

just sad to see canyon, choke and the rest full to the brim then they start dropping. i have only been fishing choke for about 6 yrs, so it looked like a new lake to me this spring.

at least we don't have it as bad as those two lakes on the border

They don't fish the Guad for trout this time of year, do they? I think the toobers probably have something to do with the releases. Anyway, it's a real hoot to see grown men elbowing each other to catch those little pisant trout when they're dumped from a tank truck into the pool below the dam.

Ok...it's our nature to complain about the trout fishing, however the Guadalupe also feeds the other Lakes and if the realeases are too slow the water sort of stagnates. My PB(3.5lb) Smallie(ultralite) came on a canoe trip between 4th crossing and Gruene. The fishing while canoeing can be excellent...if you hit the water before the drunks get up. The only problem is consistent water flows...and that will never happen. 350cfs is ideal...all we need is rain, and isn't that true for most of our summers. It seems one year the Corps holds too much water and the ramps on the lake were closed...the next they let all the water go during the early spring. I like to take a box of ultralight jigs(crawfish imitation)and primarily fish the deeper/slower parts of the river. Those rainbows will surprise you...there are some 2-3lbers. Large bluegill are also in the river and will be the majority of the fish hooked. Yeah, duff it is funny to watch them fishing for trout...here(Houston area) you'd think those fish were 20lbers by some of the tackle being used.

The trout unlimited club stocks those larger trout where they have leases to fish along the guad.

I still say it is a waste of our resources. If a privately funded club wants to stock the trout, fine. I have no problem with that.

I don't know anything about downstream stockings by Trout Unlimited. The point I was making that it seems to me regretable that the adults kind of crowd out the kids on the ramp at the pool where Texas Parks and Wildlife releases trout during the winter. There are a few decent fish in the mix, but most of them are no larger than sardines. (I assume these releases are funded by the trout stamp.)

they are still fishing now. they have guided rafts with small platforms built on them. see them all the time. most stay up around little ponderosa.

that trout is some good eatin', but native fish should not suffer because of a fad like trout fishing in south texas. to each his own, but if you want to go trout fishing around here, drive to the coast and catch a spec!

Might have something to do with the squeeking wheel getting the grease!

Not enough outcry from above the dam, so the lower part gets the grease!

This is drought prone south Texas, and everyone needs to accept that fact that you will have prolonged periods of dry, weather, and trying to maintain a fishery under those conditions is pretty selfish when you get right down to it! JMHO!

Since the lake level is down I am taking advantage of noting the shoreline structure normally underwater. When the level ever gets back up I going to throw to some of those laydowns, tree stumps, rock piles, and ledges that I've pass over not realizing that it was there.

Jimbo is right on.

Anybody know how much water is being pumped out for N. San Antonio? It probably does not help. Guess the lake will be up and down from now on depending on rain and drought and squeaky wheels.
