I rigged the UL rod with a peanut sized bobber, a small weight and a #12 SHWAPF (swept hackle, wingless, all purpose fly.) The little buggers tore it up. Unfortunately a bunch of them were tiny - much smaller than I catch with a #6 or #8 jig. Guess I'll have to add a hook size scale to my niblet definition - I had fingerlings checking out the fly! The cork was attacked several times after hitting the water. This was often followed by a good sized fish. Could have been an interesting day with dry flies.

"Just add water" sounds better than guessing which weight goes with which float.
How will a BB sinker go with a 1 1/8" float? Huh?!
I tried BB shot with these 3/16" bobbers and the bobber slowly sank. I tried cutting some lead off and finally got close.
Today I got a fly-fishing shot set and better was able to tune the rig. The kit came with four sizes - 4, 6, 8 and 10. How come the 10 is smaller than the 4? Isn't that a bit backwards?
Why is the "highest" seeded team #1, which is the lowest number?

That link to Copper John's was sure appreciated. I think a size 8 hook is okay, but it said 8/0? I have a couple of them, but think I will make a couple more up. Thanks!

You'd probably need 12 gague copper wire for a 8/0 hook.
I never could get the taper right on the copper john, even after watching a video of the guy who designed it.
The SHWAPF worked again this evening. Caught my smallest bass yet - just under 3 inches.

As much as they have been hitting the float, I figured I'd tie a float with a hook.
I found a foam, hackle, and hair hopper I tied a while back to use as a model.
I wrapped a #10 hook with two layers of lead wire to get some casting weight. Then I tied the hopper.
Like the boat I built when I was eight, the fly sank.
I guess I'm gonna have to finish that 2wt fly rod if I want a float with a hook.

I tried my model hopper with a copper john tied below. With a small weight added, I could cast it a short distance. Unfortunately, the hopper slowly sank.
I gave it soft jerks to get it back to the surface. This brought a few strikes on the hopper, but I wasn't able to hook any of them. I did catch a few on the copper john though.
After one miss, I had an un-holy mess of line wrapped around my rod. The CJ, hopper, and weight all made their own windings around the rod and each other.
Enough untangling! I switched to a spinner-jig and caught several more fish. The best of them were an 8" greenine and a 12" bass.

Fishing a small creek. Of course, everyone knows there aren't any fish in it. ;-)

Largemough sunfish like flies too. I caught this one on a size 10 hare's ear nymph.
