okay, I have the box the reel came in and the instructions but no help for this, there is a apparatus where the thing goes back and forth on a guide to keep the line evenly placed on the reel, i now have two reels where that thing is stuck
is their a proper position when tou loosen the screw to "seat it back in place again"

I believe the apparatus you are reffering to is the pawl.It simply drops inside the hole on the levelwind. That rudder shaped half moon must drop straight inside to get inside worm gear groove.I always rotate the brass levelwind gear with my finger while holding reel upside down so that the pawl will drop in place.

You probobly need a new pawl. Actually, if you use the Ambassadors a lot you should get several spare pawls as they do need occasional replacement. You can order them from Southwest Parts and Supply in Dallas. 214 630 8161. Install them the way David said.
