I'm new to Jug Lines... But I set out 8 free floating jugs a month ago. We caught about 15 channels in about 4 hours. but only 3 were keepers.

we were fishing at night in about 4 - 7 ft of water, next to the bank with a lot of vegetation. and was using DK blood bait.

What can I do to catch better channels?

I'm thinking about putting on a 1-2Lb weight and fishing deeper. But how much deeper should I go?.... 20 or more?

Nothing wrong with the way you were running them. I have a buddy that runs jugs like that and does quite well. He'll throw out 15 or so with just enough weight to keep the bait down and let 'em drift across flats, etc. He stays with 'em though and when he gets 2-3 fish on he goes and picks 'em up.

Sounds like you were just in an area with alot of little ones. It happens even fishing rod and reel.

I don't fish the lake you do but I normally run my jugs 5 to 12 feet with approx 2lb weight on the very bottom of the line. I usually bait the hooks with live perch, cut perch, & frozen shad and do pretty good. The blues and channels hit pretty good on the cut perch and frozen shad and have caught a few yellows on the live perch. The lake I fish has dams on the colorado river and I find that I get better results when they generate and there is a current. When I set my jugs out I will usually move about 50 to 100 yards away and fish R&R and keep an eye on my jugs.

Agreed, change bait. I've only cut dinks omn prepared bait, always caught keepers on natural cut bait.

I usually catch a lot of blues at night in deeper water 10-45ft. but i would change bait because the scent of DK would prob be gone in 30 min. I only use DK's on my rods and do well. If your after big fish use live perch. Just keep trying and try different places. You will find them.

I've been doing good. Fishing 35-40 feet with fresh shad. Find the deep flats.

Beef heart works good for cutbait in some lakes.
