If'n I were you I would ask the question in the boats and motors section and include make and HP of motor, might get some favorable results.

NO NEED TO SHOUT
Is this about motors in general, or a specific year, make and hp?

Just put the control in reverse and adjust while rotating the prop till it engages in reverse. You can look at shift linkage movement to tell direction needed.

NO NEED TO SHOUT
Have you put the lower back on and reconnected the linkage under the bottom carb?
When the throttle/shift control is in neutral, the motor's in neutral?
What happens when you move it to forward?
What happens when you move it to reverse?
Does that motor have the hydraulic-assist shift, or mechanical?
Do you have a manual? The shift rod height has to be precisely measured for it to work right. I might have a book with that spec in it somewhere around here -- I can check when I get home.

i'm going on OLD memory here.
I think you screw the rod in all the way, then 5 or 6 turns out.
then connect the rod to the linkage under the carb. and make your adjustments as stated above.
up on the rod, should be forward, and down with the rod is reverse... (i think) been along time since i messed with those old omc's.

every thing works fine until the motor is running and the it seems like the cable is not able to push it far enough back.so i replaced both cables re adjusted everything and still have the same problem i think it might not have been adjusted right before i bought it.

The shift shaft connects to the linkage. You need to take linkage loose and back out the shift shaft. In otherwords you screwed it in too far. Like Steve said and you will have to drop the lower unit to get r done. Good Luck

I believe what you have there is a hydraulic assisted mechanical shift lower unit. The hydraulic pump might require service.

that is a hydro mechanical shift all it really does is smooths out the shifting ,if you unscrewed the shift rod then you need to find a manual that gives that measurment,it has to be set at the right hight, also the lower unit oil needs to be premium blend and not high visc, the pump wont work correctly with high visc

The seloc manual gives measurements for the V-6's, but for the rest of the hydro-assist motors just says to screw it in till it seats, then turn it back until the offset points forward. Factory service manual probably has more specific instuctions -- available at www.iboats.com , www.kencook.com , www.marineengine.com

Clymer manual gives the measurement, I think. I loaned mine out 6 months ago and havent gotten it back. But my factory manual is in my boat at the mini warehouse. If I can get by there tomorrow, I'll look it up for you. My guess is between 4-6 turns from bottomed out, as steve said.
