Well that is about all I do. There are tons of creeks in the North Texas area swarming with various kinds of panfish. Some not so big but all full of fight. That's why I prefer my light tackle for fishing in town.

I hear that crappie are a blast when you can find them shallow enough for the fly. I simply have never gone out after them. Probably need to.

Yes, they are the kings of light tackle in my opinion.

I have been mulling over the idea of buying a 2 wt. A nice short one. Say 7 or 7.5 ft. It would be perfect for spending a day in my canoe on Barton Creek.

What I know about fly fishing won't amount to a fireant mound. I do have a beginner fly rod and reel ($30 blister pack from Walmart) with 6# mono for a tippit. I have tried to fly fish at various times for years but never had much luck.
Last fish I caught on a fly pole was a needle nose gar on a yellow yarn (no hook) home made lure.

Any recomendations using the above outfit for catching some bream. What flies, what size flies, methods---you know, kind of a beginners primer ("Here kid, use this fly and throw it right here" type stuff)

grandpa if i was giving advice to someone just starting i would say get some small poppers (walmart used to sell them but if they dont anymore acadamy does) and catch some bream they bite best early or late in the day, reading magizine articles and various warmwater fly fishing websites can only help (just don't let all the [censored] overwelm you, its really pretty simple stuff) good luck

Grandpa, I think a woolly bugger, scud, spiders, and poppers are the way to go for you.

I have a pretty good selection of flies bought at Yellowstone, Colorado, and some Cabelas I have been to around the country. I just dont know what the heck they are. I do know rubber legged spiders and woolly buggers and poppers.
I got my first fly outfit from an uncle that died back in the 50's. It was a 9' split bamboo rod with two tips and a real. I used it to catch bunches of blue gill down at the YMCA pond. The uncle fly fished for muskie. My ineptitude managed to break both bamboo tips on backcasts stuck in trees and bushes.

I tried taking the fly pole out in my 8' inflatable pontoon, but the wind does not bode well for navigating and casting.

But I will it another shot one of these days.
thanks for the info

Kelkay I hope I run into you some day. Maybe up at the LOP damn.
The summer heat just about kills me so that is pretty much where I do my fishing when I do go.

The nymphs that are commonly sold for trout fishing work really well for BG. Some examples are squirrel tail nymph, zug bug, prince nymph, pheasant tail nymph. The ones tied with a beadhead (BH) are by far the best and even better are those with BH and rubber legs added. These are absolutely deadly on all kinds of BG. If you want lots of action, fish with generally smaller nymphs in sizes 12 and 14....but if you want larger fish and are ok with somewhat less action use larger sized flies such as #8. If you can get a rubber legged BH squirrel tail nymph out across some likely BG habitat and fish it verrryy slowly, if there are BG present, they will bite. Strip set and you are in business!!

I fish almost every day this way....and in summer its early and late.

Grandpa we are gonna have to meet up there one day. I have drastically reduced my fishing due to the heat myself. I can't take these temps, and it hasn't even gotten to summer heat levels yet. I dread 100 deg days, and will be staying in the house...LOL.
