i love yellow magics, but for about 9.99 you can get the excaliber's has alot of the same features of the yellow magics. catches just as many fish. just another alternative.

Yellow Magics are good poppers, but the hooks suck!

Yellow Magics are a tuned bait and higher quality.. but the Pop "R" will still catch plenty of fish. I think the Yellow Magic might get you a few more bites on finicky fish.

Just remember Presentation goes a long way with Top waters... you have to work it the way the fish want it to get bit.

I bought some of the BPS Extreme poppers during the Father's Day sale.. they work well. I had 2 fish on one at the same time that would have totaled (Est) over 6 1/2# pounds.. the 2 1/2# (est) fish came unbuttoned in the net but the 4# fish stayed hooked up.
You might want to give them a try.

Here are my thoughts. We spend tons of money on a boat. We spend $100-$1,000 on a rod & reel. We spend a lot of money on tow vehicle and boat fuel. We get up early and put in a long day in the hot sun. laugh

The lure you tie on the end of your line is the instrument that actually draws the strike to catch the fish that made you want to pursue this sport in the first place. fish

In the scheme of things does it really matter if you spend $4.00 or $15.00 on that plug if that is what it takes to get bit?? noidea Think about it.

I know there would be situations where the bass would most likely bite the stock Pop-R really well. The Yellow Magic will draw strikes from highly pressured fish that have seen a million Pop-R's but it is not the Silver Bullet of bass fishing. You have to have the right conditions.

If you throw it out and do the bloop-pause, bloop-pause thing then you might as well stay with the Pop-R. That is not the way the Yellow Magic was designed to be fished. The bait produces best when it is moved along relatively fast almost like you are walking the dog with a Zara Spook.

Get the cadence right and it "spits" which duplicates the sound of a threadfin shad surfacing almost perfectly. Troll around on YouTube and find the video of Zell Rowland demonstrating how to fish it. He is the guy that first started sanding the body and the lip to obtain the spitting sound. thumb

Hope this helps you spend your money! clap rolfmao

I agree.. the magic is a little more of a subtle bait than the pop-r. However, the baits are maid to withstand a tremendous beating. I have never had one break from hitting a dock

Seems like the feather comes apart to easy. Second one this year after only a couple 3 fish on each. I have had my 2 ricos for years and caught many fish on each and havent lost a feather. Good thing they were gifts cause I aint paying that much for them.

The nice thing about topwater plugs is you hardly ever lose one and if you do its to a big fish.

If a 9 pound bass comes up and takes that Rico away from you I bet you are at the tackle shop plopping down another $22 for one the next day!

I have drilled holes in my cheaper lures and it lets water fly backwards as well as forward. My grandson does well with them.

I got to spend some time with Zell at the recent Skeeter Owners Tournament and he suggested the Zell Pop which he designed. He claimed that it will hold it's own against the Yellow Majic. I realize he wants to sell the bait he designed but it may be worth trying.

What I meant was someone else bought the ricos for me and no I wouldnt go buy another one the next day even if a 9 came up on it. i can spit the YM's just like the ricos. Just wish the feathers were alittle better.

yellow magic is the best of all i have tried

i like the rico's and pop'rs too but but the to me there is just something a little more special about the yellow magics

i just remember back in the day all the fish i caught on the frog colored tiny torpedo with a zebco 33 - wonder what these other poppers would have done

what about for $20.00 the iovino splash it? looks just like the yellow magic...

but on the comparison of the yellow magic and the pop r, I remember many years ago on richland chambers and on the vine, my old friend (mac 3) and I were out there and he caught 5 bass to my 1. he was fishing the yellow magic and I was still the pop r fan...

The Splash It is good. I have one of them. The Sugoi Splash by Yamamoto looks good too. I have never fished one of them.

You have one day like the one you are talking about where your partner beats you 5 to 1 and I'll bet even ole yankerin would buy another one... woot

I have use the Pop-R, the Yellow Magic, the Zell Pop and the Iovino Splah-It. They will all catch you fish but I personally have done the best with the Yellow Magic. I can't expalin it because the Iovino Splash-It and the Yellow Magic both have similar actions in the water, but I have done the best on the Yellow Magics, maybe thats why they call it "Magic".

One thing to remember when using any of these baits is the type of Knot you tie on it. You want to use a Uni-knot or Cinch type Knot. That won't move quite as easy. Then cinch it down on the lower portion of the eye. This will help give the bait more of a splashing spitting effect. Check it often to make sure it hasn't worked up the eye. Catch one, reset it.

I have had to repaint and replace worn hooks on Pop R's in my years of fishing, As a matter of fact I caught nine LMB between 2 and 5 lbs this morning on main lake points at Ray Bob before the topwater bite quit. The best bait for the money by far. I have known Zell Rowland for years and he actually uses Pop R's when he is fishing for money. The other baits mentioned are in my arsenal to and are good baits as well, but when clients are in the boat, the topwater bite is going and then Pop R's are on the line makin memories.
