One thing that i have learned, if you can IMAGINE TBTS learning
anything is for me TUNING is the MOST important thing. You will
learn more stuff FASTER when you learn how to tune. Its very
"tricky" on your ears. You need to get a GOOD electronic tuner
i use a small one with a microphone built in. It costs under
$100 but you cant do much with the cheapos.

I don't think i'm musically inclined enough to play the guitar. I tried taking piano lessons and was ok at it, but not as good as I would have liked. I think playing the guitar would be better.

I play, but I'm sure I play a much more conservative style than what you are used to, therefore I don't think you would be able to teach me anything about your VERY liberal style.

Lesson 2: Learn scale patterns.
example: Do re mi fa so la ti do is C major scale.
It is all Whole notes the only one.
Almost all "kiddie" songs are in C.
Twinkle twinkle little star....
Learn the order Sharps.
It starts to make sense over time.

Music is MATH. "Chords" are made of 1st, 3rd, and 5th Scales.
chords go "together" in progressions. 1....4....5....1
kinda like family pecking order?

I have NEVER used tabs. I dont like them, but many folks do. Tabs show you the string "numbers" to play. I think you can be a way better player by ear. To each his own. An example, of TABS. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/

It sounded pretty Pink Floyd ish.
Is that a Strat?
A little bit of Reverb and slight echo.
What was that?

What was that? Actually, I think he's playing a guitar custom-built for him by Carvin, but don't quote me. If you have never heard Holdsworth, you'll be amazed at the textures he can create. I don't think anyone is as smooth, and he can do that with lightning speed if he wants. Holdsworth is pretty much the master in fusion circles. If you are truly open-minded when it comes to music and are adventurous, I can point you to a few cuts that'll blow your socks off. Trust me---you'll flip. By the way, he is 50 times the guitarist that Gilmour is---and I like Gilmour.

Guitar is not "taught".....it is "felt".
Some mechanics are taught, sure.....but the music must be "felt" somewhere deep inside the player for it to sound like "real guitar" when he puts it to the fretboard.
I have three pieces of advice:
1: Dont try to learn on a cheap guitar. They are too hard to play and sound like carp anyway. You'll only give up.
2. Learn your chords. ALL of them..in each position. You can NEVER play an effective riff unless you know your chords. All great players use their chords as a basis of their riffs. The ones that dont, sound like amateurs...because they ARE, no matter how long they've played.
3. Just as in playing pool....a guitar is meant to be STROKED.....not POKED. If you bang on it, you are NOT a guitar player....you are just a kid, trying to IMITATE a guitar player. It's not how many notes you play or how fast you play them. It's WHICH notes you play....and when you play them. But most of all it's the notes you DONT play that separates you from the herd.
If you dont feel it in your chest....then dont play it. If you feel that the note HAS to be there...dont play it more than once in a riff, if possible. It doesnt always have to have balance. Letting things hang in mid air is a good thing. Leave it up to the listener's imagination.

I have not played a single note of music in my life but I am musically inclined. I believe very much that you must be able to feel the emotion before you can express it to those around you. The expression could be visually, verbally, or musically.
