Had committed to surf fish on Thursday. Left San Antonio at 2:30 AM. Bought bait, etc. Got to the beach and was greeted by large waves, lots of weeds and strong current, but the water was clear enough. It has been my experience that if the water is clear the trout will be there. Got beat nearly to death by the waves but managed to pick up a keeper trout here and there. At one point looked down and all that was left of my landing net was the handle. Oh well, used the old 5 fingered landing net. At around 11:30 the trout turned on. At one point I took out 12 piggies and landed 11 trout. Most of those were smallish though. Around 14-16 inches with 2 good keepers. I have plenty of fish in the freeze so only kept 9 fish 17-20 inches. Released many 15 1/2- 16 inch keepers. Several times had an extremely strong rip current for about 15-20 seconds. One of the strongest I've ever experienced. Almost took my feet out from under me. Am sore today from getting knocked down and slapped around by the waves but a good fishing day nevertheless. Great to be surf fishing, my favorite thing to do.

rick, I usually wake up early and do those one day fishing trips in rockport, never the surf, looks like a blast! Going to have to let me know when you do that again, we'll split gas, I'll drive too! Said you use piggies huh, my favorite bait in the bays too, do pin perch or mullett work?

Hey rick, i fish the surf the alot around pins and i always use croaker and i usualy do preaty good. Do u think piggies work better then croaker in the surf and also ive been getting my piggies from clems bait shop and they have been preaty small. Hows the bait been for you?

Piggies seem to work just as well and are easier to keep alive. 2 weeks ago they were very small at Clems. Last Thursday they were a bigger average size but some were still small. What will happen is that as the croaker get too large the piggies will get to be bigger.
I wish I could find a lure that worked as well as piggies or croaker. I usually get around 5 dozen. Very expensive.
