CHL Applications increase 40%, DPS swamped

There is an article in my May/June issue of the TSRA(Texas State Rifle Association)Sportsman magazine stating that the DPS has reported a surge of license applications nearing 40%. Speculation on the cause of the surge may be a possible Hussein Yobama anti-gun administration. Regardless, the surge has swamped DPS and license processing times have sky rocketed beyond the 60 day deadline. Renewals are exceeding 100 days in some cases. An interesting "work around" is suggested to avoid letting your Texas CHL expire due to the long processing times: Since Pennsylvania and Texas have a reciprocal CHL agreement, and you can get a Pennsylvania CHL, accepted here in Texas, with no training requirements. It is processed in 30 days and the cost is $26! The license is good for 5 years. Here is what is required along with the Application form from the website: A photo copy of a license to carry a firearm (concealed carry permit) from your home state if that state has a concealed carry law. A photo copy of your Driver's License. A self addressed stamped envelope. $26.00 fee for five year license and out of state processing. (Check/money order made out to Centre County Sheriff.) Here is the link to the web site where you can apply: http://www.co.centre.pa.us/211.asphttp://www.co.centre.pa.us/sheriff/license_application.aspAll anti-gun liberal weenies need not apply.

Just wondering...... If people are afraid of an Obama administration in regard to gun ownership.... What makes them think that having a CHL is going to make a difference? I don't see the connect here. I'm thinking......I don't WANT government agencies to know that I have guns. If I were a government official, intent upon depriving people of their firearms, the first place I'd look is at the folks with a CHL....or a class 3 license. But hey....maybe I'm giving to much credit to the intelligence of the average government goon.

dogsdad, Yes, that is a good point. PA has been referred to as the "Land of Taxes". However, I think in this case, they are more interested in the $$ revenue. It is interesting on how such a "Blue State" issues CHL's without any training requirements. I think it goes back to my "cash cow" theory.

bk, my thinking is that we DO want the gov. to know we have guns and lots of them and that they will be used if the need arises. I don't have any problems with that part. I wouldn't give mine up. Period. But, one would have to have that mindset as a personal conviction.

I don't mind them knowing I have guns. I don't necessarily want them to know of all my guns. The CHL wait is a beating...but worth it.

That's an interesting way of looking at the issue Bob. Never thought of it that way. I'm not sure they need to know exactly who has them, though. One very good thing is that they can find out who originally bought them by looking through all the old 4473s, but they don't know where they are now. The used gun market is a very good thing! The thing about the 4473's is that they have to get them from the dealers. Also....you can always say..."Sorry. I don't have that gun anymore. No...I don't remember who I sold it to...I think I sold it to a guy at a gun-show."

The used gun market is a very good thing! And that is what they fear. The liberals fear the unregistered movement of guns among law abiding citizens as much if not more than the lawbreaking citizens. This is what they will stop. Buy one or two on the unregistered market soon.

Thanks.
p.s., Post count continues! Rolling up on 20k. Planning the 20k party yet? Why, yes I have been planning. When I reach 20k I plan on checking myself into a mental health hospital for a complete check up.

If you're a pollack you can get one from PA for free. I'm confused. Why would the State of Pennsylvania give a CHL to a fish?

I have heard that Texas has stopped requiring us to go through the course and qualify anymore to renew, just fill out a renewal form and send it in. Has anybody else heard this?
Also Pennsylvania may reciprocate with us, but how many other states reciprocate with Pennsylvania? I know that many many states reciprocate with Texas.

I do know that the expiration period has increased to 5 years instead of 4. I'm good for 5 years. Had to re-qualify back in October of last year. So I don't know if the law has changed since then. I don't know how many reciprocate with PA. It is just mentioned as a work around for Texas CHL holders whos license may expire due to the long processing times due to the 40% increase in CHL applications. That is the real meat of this topic if you think about it. A 40% increase. Perhaps some are finally starting to understand the importance of the right to carry legally as it exists today. My hope is that they in turn will vote this November for the candidate that is least likely to diminish this right.

Anyone know of an organization that offers this training in the Flower Mound area?

Awesome! $26 versus $70 plus the cost and time of the class to get renewed.

I know that anyone would want a convenient location for taking the CHL class, but I'd like to mention that one of the instructors at this school is Ray Allen, one of the state legislators instrumental in writing the CHL law. He'll give you the straight skinny because he knows the straight skinny. Not meant as a knock on the other guys. CHL
