I'm going to organize some bank fishing tournaments in the DFW area in the coming months. I'd like there to be entry fees and money / prizes given out to the winners to help generate interest. I'd like some feedback / ideas on rules, regulations, etc.

To make it fun, we could target different species at each tournament and also once in a while have a anything goes tournament. I'm a fan of k.i.s.s. (keep it simple stupid) so I would just like to have prizes for the total weight of fish caught (1st - 3rd places) and a seperate prize for the heaviest fish of the day. ?

We could have different tournaments for:
Panfish - (Bluegill, Sunfish, Crappie, etc.)
Largemouth Bass - Would be tough, but fun!
Carp & Buffalo
Gar - (Longnose, Spotted, Alligator)
Catfish - (Channel, Blue, Flathead)
Anything Goes! - (Over a pre-determined length, weight)

Since we don't want stringers of fish or holding nets, we would need a couple of judges at each event to verify the catch, weight and release of each fish and to also record the data of the catch.

I'm doing external research on the legal aspects of money being involved, but if anyone else has any experience with this, please chime in with your thoughts. I want to advertise the tournaments so being legal is 100% a requirement.

Speaking of money, I'd like the entry fees to be as low as possible while still providing enough prize money to interest anglers. (100% Pay back for prizes from entry fees.) So what do you think would be a fair price for entry fees? I'm already contacting sponsors for prizes, etc. wink

As far as rules go, so far off the top of my head:

Rods: 1 per angler.
Hooks: Any size, single hooks only.
Lines: Any weight, 1 hook (or lure) per line.

Thanks for any feedback you can offer. wink

Id like to hear more about this, Theyre are so many good anglers that understand principle but do not have the opt to have a boat they simply just dont get reconized for theyre fishing, i think its a swell idea!Theyre are probably a num of reasons why, but this way we can bring the community of fisherman together both novice and Pro

Let me know, this is a good idea

Thanks for the comments, keep em coming. smile I think it would be great to schedule 6 tournaments a year, one every 2 months.

(In no particular order:)

1) Panfish
2) Carp, Buffalo
3) Bass
4) Catfish
5) Gar
6) Multi Species

I'd be in as long as there were local. I think it would be fun.
I'm not sure how you would keep people from catching fish and putting them on a stringer the night before.

Sounds fun though!

As things progress there will be an official call for help. wink Keep the thoughts, ideas coming. This IS going to happen and should be a blast for everyone involved. wink

"I'm not sure how you would keep people from catching fish and putting them on a stringer the night before."

Each tourney will have a pre-selected stretch of bank where the tournament will be held. We'll also randomly determine where each angler will fish the morning of the tournament.

What I'd like immediate feedback on is how much each person would be willing to pay in entry fees? This also determines prize potential to attract other anglers so this is fairly important. Hopefully though even if the money isn't that great, prizes and "a good time for all" will make up for it. wink

Depending on what kind of fish it is for, I would pay up to $15-$20

We've had several carp tournaments in the area over the past couple years, and the entry fee was about $20. That seemed to be a fair price to most people--not too expensive, but enough to provide a nice pot for the winner(s).

you might waht to have a "zone" system. a predertermined bank area with diffrerent zones . that way every anglers has a chance to fish all the areas on the bank. This wa nobody can hold on the best spot all day long. You could do a random drawing of who starts where and the rotate every 30 min to and hour. Just an idea for you. Sounds like it could be a fun event , as long as you keep is fun and not about the money, more about the fellowship and braggin rights!!

Try to use the K.I.S.S. method here. Starting to get too complicated.

I think this to be a great idea. I would like to ask about a junior tourny, or if juniors would be allowed to participate. I am 16 and I have no boat, so a bank tourny would be awesome. i would pay anything below $25.00 entry fee. I would like to see one of these tournament at Ray Hubbard. It is the only lake i can get to and is relatively good on fish size and variety. This would be a great break from fishing the small, weed infested pond by my house. Great idea.

There could also be a limit to the number of fish you can enter for the total weight. I mean that you could still catch as many fish as time allows you to catch, but the total weight should only use a certain number of fish as some anglers will have caught more fish than others.

Sounds like a really fun idea, I would even consider bringing my son . I could also bring a igloo full of kool aid or ice water. Lemme know if you need anything via PM.

What about wading?
One rod only? Two would be very reasonable, I'd think at least. Single hooks only? No crankbaits?

I'll come take your money whenever you want.

As far as rules go, so far off the top of my head:

Rods: 1 per angler at a time (more rod can be usedjust 1 at a time).
Hooks: Any size, single hooks only.
Lines: Any weight, 1 hook (or lure) per line.
live bait, artifical, and cut bait allowed
all legal size limits/minimums must be enforced

maybe a fun thing to do (only a suggestion) is to have a $5 fee kids div. (under 12)

good stuff guys!

Great feedback guys, very much appreciated. As far as the rules go, I still like the idea of one rod, but you can have as many in your arsenal as needed. Probably only treble hooks allowed on bass tournaments when most will be using lures. (crank baits, etc)

I will be making an official page soon and will post when it's done. Keep the ideas coming. This is going to be a blast! smile

Gar and catfish people usually use trebles... would be kinda unfair (esp for gar) to exclude those.

Where would these tourneys be?

The idea is great. but was wondering if you really could find a place where all of the contestants could bank fish and still have someone watching over them. I am fairly new to Texas still and would think it would be a task to do it. but heck, i am game for it never the less.

"but was wondering if you really could find a place where all of the contestants could bank fish and still have someone watching over them."

Each tournament would be limited to a pre-determined number of entries, based on available bank space, etc. So far, based on feedback I'm guessing we'll have 15-20 anglers per tournament. We'll probably need a couple of volunteers to help with the catch verification, data entry, etc.

Re: Trebles. While I can understand this is a touchy subject, if trebles were not allowed during the tourney I don't see this as being a disadvantage or advantage to anyone.

Contact the Corps of Enigineer's ask if you can put up Signs near the entrances to a few of their parks.. Put those up a few weeks before the tourny and you should have a mega sweet turn out.

I got lumber to make the signs along with paint.

I even know a dude with a table top hot dog cart we could use to sell or give away hot dogs to kids.

What will happen with the fish that are caught? Im new to the tournament thing but how will the fish be kept alive without a live well. I would hate to see alot of dead fish. Dont the fish have to be alive to count in other (boat) tournaments..

I only use lures with trebles about half the time from the bank, other things I use are single, like buzzbaits, spinners, jig, plastics so the treble thing needs to be rethought some.

I've started an official forum just for the tournaments. It's located here:

http://texasbankfishing.com/tournaments/

Q) "What will happen with the fish that are caught? Im new to the tournament thing but how will the fish be kept alive without a live well. I would hate to see alot of dead fish."

A) We'll have volunteers that verify each catch, weight, release. The goal will be to get the fish back into the water asap. wink

Q) "I only use lures with trebles about half the time from the bank, other things I use are single, like buzzbaits, spinners, jig, plastics so the treble thing needs to be rethought some."

A) Again, this will be a tough call. This will really only be an issue when bass are part of the tournament fish. Even though personally I would like to make it a treble free tournament, I can see certain lures being pretty much a requirement when bass fishing. Again, let's see how the majority feels on the issue in the coming weeks. wink

Well, it's a slow start, but we have a total of 3 anglers on the tournament forum so far. smile Could use some more. If interested, hop on over to the TBF Tournament forum and let's get this organized. I'm ready to run with it, but I'd like to get some final feedback before proceeding. Thanks!

Y'all might want to think about White Rock Lake. Back in the early 90's events like this were held for the youngsters there> You have long banks and lot of open area for the people to fish the banks. All kinds of fish in the lake and would allow for each person to fish a diff part of the bank and still be within the eye of a judge. Just a thought and my 2cents . Hope it helps.

Ok, I went and got my name on the fishing site also. Just not to many people have signed up for it just yet. Hopefully more of the bank fishermen and women will sign up so that we can have us some fishing tournments. At least have them go and check out the site and sign up for that so they can see what it is all about. fish

Yah, this will take time to set up and organize. That's ok, I'm in this for the long haul. I'd rather do it "right" then do it fast and un professional, etc. It's going to be fun once it's all organized and ready to go! smile

I would attend those as my work schedule allowed. I signed up and posted some suggessions over there mostly towards tying to keep it simple and not overly ruled, but it would be ok with me however dmunsie set it up.

I think it would be best to have the tournaments on the weekend. Just an idea, but I think it wuld be best to have the tournaments on the weekends. The weekends provide more of a chance for anglers to plan the tournaments around their work schedules and for the younger anglers to plan them around their school schedules. More people would attend if they were on the weekends, in my oppinion. Good luck starting this thing up, and i expect to attend some of the tournaments myself.

White Rock lake and Ray Hubbord would be great locations for tournaments involving all species of fish.

Wondering if any more fishermen have signed up for the tournment yet. We need more to make it worth our time that is for sure.

It's a slow process, but I feel confident each tournament will have plenty of entries. I should be making some updated annoucements soon. Keep on passing the word around. wink Obviously this won't be a one man show, so in the near future I'll be asking if anyone wants to join the offical team to help organize, participate in the event. smile

Suggestion on the problem of fixed positions to keep people from "stringering" fish..

Have people randomly paired up, if there is a multiple day event rotate the teams.

would be good to give people a little time to debate where the team goes to fish, but this would open up the fishing areas.

There are situation where the fish caught cannot be release back into the water because some fish will swallow a hook (esp. Perch). Sometime it is impossible to remove the hook without pulling out their stomach or intestinal tract. I think we should have a portable grill or camp small fire there also to cook them on the spot for the dead fish.

I like the $20 entry fee.

I suggest having two poles per angler, so we can have different bait on each pole. Single hook on each line is good for me.

Lake Ray Hubbard or White Rock work for me...with high gas price no one like to travel far.

Count me in for the Bass tourney. Sounds like a blast. I'll pay $20-$30 to enter.

I was all for this until i read some of the rules. 1-3 people teams but one pole in at a time?
