Do you guys think it'd be ok to drive for a couple of days without an air filter? I don't plan on doing it for more than 3 days max (until my new filter gets in). I know there's a lot of bad stuff in the air, but do y'all think it'd do any damage for 3 days of light driving? Here in nacogdoches my longest drive is about 3 miles.

long as its not dirty air its sucking in. no moisture or dust- thats bad.

Did you order a K&N or something? What do you drive? I wouldn't take the risk. You'll suck some bugs, debris (leaves), and dirt. Even for a few days, you'll get the intake dirty. Just think of all that dust that will collect in the throttle body and intake. I would by a cheap replacement or put the old one in until the new one comes in.

I'm a broke college kid. That = too cheap to buy a replacement. I drive an '04 Ram 2500 with the cummins. I have a K&N right now, but it's seen some serious use and beyond using (my mpg dropped from 24 to 12). I called them and e-mailed a picture, tried cleaning it, and it's just too dirty, so they said they'd send me a new one at no cost since even their own cleaning products failed to get it clean. I'm thinking I may try to bum some panty-hose from a friend stretch it over the intake until my new filter gets here.

If your longest drive is 3 miles, you could just walk...

dont put anything in front of that air intake. a diesel has a LOT higher compression, and sucks a HUGE volume of air through that intake. I have seen red shop rags sucked into an engine very quickly.... i wouldnt do anything until I got the new filter. that dieseld would suck a cat through that intake if it got close enough... seriously!

I would put the dirty one back on. Think of it this way, it didn't get dirty from sitting there. It did it's job. Let it do so for just a little longer.

Hey Cboone, I completely understand the "broke college kid" syndrome. Been there and about to be there again. One thing about the turbo, they don't like anything but air going past those fins. Grains of sand will blast away at them and any other debris will definitely mess things up and cost way more than a filter. Turbos can suck tons of air. It is always good to have a stock replacement when you have a K&N. While cleaning the filter and waiting for it to dry, you will at least have a filter on hand if you need to go some where.

I've got one on my '98 Tahoe and the filter element in several places has deteriorated pretty bad.

I think it's a million-mile. They stand behind their stuff pretty good.

I called K&N customer service and sent them a couple of digital images of my deteriorating K&N filter. (installed in my '98 Tahoe approx nine years ago)

She (Mandy) called me back and said a new, replacemet filter was on the way!

Received it yesterday!

I clean my K&N with simple green. It's much cheaper than buying one of those recharge kits each time. Buy the simple green in the gallon jug. Since it's concentrated, it will last a good while. Place the filter in one of those tin foil throw away cooking pans and let it soak. Then rinse, dry and oil. Easy.
