Is this the time of year to fish for King Fish. I fish Port Aransas alot around the jetties and stuff, I have seen some caught in and around the jetties, and was just wondering is this the time of year. If so, what are the tricks to catching them??.....artifical, live bait....leaders?? Any help would be great. I only have a Blue Wave 190 Deluxe, so I am really limited to how far off shore I can get :-). I am looking to head South of Tuesday.

Thanks
Ron

Ron,

The weather should be nice with calmer seas in the morning. I use ribbonfish on a 3 hook leader with a king buster in red/white or pink/white. I use #5 or #6 wire with 2 red treble hooks and #5 or #6 octopus for the lead hook. I always make my own. When you head out from the jetties you can start your drift at the second channel marker on your right (south) and drift to the north. Any of the near shore platforms should hold kings. To increase your action you might use some ground chum in an inexpensive mesh chum bag. Port A Outfitters carries everything I mentioned. I am going down Tuesday as well.

Good Luck

load up with manhaden, some for chum and the rest keep alive. use a 120lb steel leader(flexable)about 12-16 inches long with a 7/0 hook. free line the manhaden out about 10-12 ft tie on a balloon around the line, pay it out no more than 10-15 yds. while at anchor. This works best at the end of the jetty just past the ebb on a out going tide. Every 5-7 min throw out a dead manhaden or two. the balloons won't last long after you call them up. Make sure you have spare line when you go.
