OK first I'm going to try something NEW on this " Day On The Water". Let me know what you all think. I sprinkled in videos and time lines. I'm trying to make it more reader friendly

I met Lake Fork Guide Clint Wright at 5:50 this morning at the Dalrock Ramp on Lake Ray Hubbard.

While talking to Clint earlier this week I explained to him how Hubbard was nothing like FORK or any other lake he's probably ever fished. You will see as the write up goes on, that Hubbard took all Clint had today.

Guys and Gals, Clint is a very smart fisherman and showed me more great tricks and tips today. I would say if you get a chance to fish with him do it, you will learn a good bit, and he does night trips.

Although it was a ......not going to let you off that easy.

We launched at 6:00 Am and Clint was on his way to attack one of the toughest around.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpcBEajPgG4

Clint Moves to the East side of Dalrock road fishing the South West rocks of I30. He idles down the RipRap and waits till he see's something Different about the rocks. He's looking for the key areas and not wanting to waist time on having to pick apart the rocks.

6:10
Clint pulls up to a lay down and starts casting a X-Mas Pumpkin Reaction Innovation Sweet Beaver. It's rigged Texas style with a 3/8 weight.

Nothing going on there moves to another laydown 50 yard from first area and finds another laydown.

6:15
Whack with a fast swift hook set Clint lands his first BASS of the day a 1.4 LB fat bellied fighter.

Sack so far 1 fish 1.4 lbs

It's not this easy I say laughingly.

After a few more cast to lay down He moves to North West side of the I30 rocks on the East branch. He starts off throwing a Sebile Magic Swimmer and a Sebile Splasher.

He has a nice blow up on the Splasher, but can't get the fish to committee to taking it or a beaver.

6:35
Clint Breaks off on the rocks and says thats Hubbard huh.I bet that ill that happen again today he states. ( it happened 16 more times today, LOL) Although I have never seen someone retie that fast, it took him 30 seconds from break off to next cast

Clint has now moved to the Habor Bay Marina and starts fishing a nice drop off inside the Marina. He attacks it the beaver and splasher. Boat is in 9 feet of water and only 3 feet from bank.

6:52
Clint sticks fish #2 on a Sebile splasher, it pops the lure like a dink, but turns out not to bad a 1.1 lb bass. Hey took long enough he tells me. I reply with "you not on fork anymore HUH" He just laughs.

Sack so Far 2 fish 2.5 lbs

7:25
After throwing everything at the Ole Large Mouth in Harbor Bay, Clint moves to Chandler Landing, at this point I'm getting excited. He has found a Bass Factory. He starts fishing the out side rocks of chandlers using a Chart crank bait in 20+ feet of water.

7:45
He moves inside Chandler marina and starts to fish a floating sea wall next to the Marina store, to my surprise he doesn't even get a bite. He threw a X-Mas Pumpkin beaver and drop shotted a water melon candy Reaction innovation fin worm.

He tells me about he became a guide
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Amr4tlNzbZY

8:15
He has now moved towards the dam and goes into a cove I will left unamed, LOL. He starts to fish around some SAIL BOATS,a dn fishes a beaver of a sloping seawall. With no bite he moves to the back and fishes timber in 14 feet of water throwing a drop shot and Jig with a Beaver trailer. He finish up in this area with a Sebile Swimmer.

Clint is know confused on how to fish Ray Hubbard, he tells me that fish are not where there supposed to be, while laughing.

He states he has seen some great areas and will now start fishing those picking them apart. This lake is to big to cover all of it he says.

He heads back to Chandlers and starts on the inside this time.

9:10
After no bites on a drop shot, he ties on a DD22 and cranks the rocks inside chandlers. 3rd cast he loads up on a fish quickly points out it's not the size he wants, but will take it. It's a bass weighing 1.1 pounds. Hey if that fish will bite it a BIG ONE SHOULD, he says as casting his next cast.

Sack So Far 3 Fish 3.6 lbs

9:31
While talking to a good friend and TFF'er KEEB, Clint sticks a small bass on a Shaky Head reaction innovation fin worm. It's small one weighing .15 lbs.

Sack So Far 4 Fish 4.5 lbs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRdqgd0V14Y

For the next 2 hours or so it is brutal for Clint with the exception of a Gizzard Shad, he doesn't get a bite. He moved from chandlers to Texas Queen to Bass pro Shops cove and BPS Rocks at I30, to the West side of Dalrock fishing the NE rocks as well as the SE rocks. He threw DD22's/Shaky Heads/ 3.8 weighted beavers/Drop Shots. I learned a lot about how to keep chunking through adverse condition on the lake. Clint never complained and keep grinding it out trying to at least bag a LIMIT.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCyHN5nXq5M

12:27
Clint has went back to Chandlers and this time has moved to the back along a shallow grass line, he's throwing a small shaky head trying to catch one more fish at the least. Well he does, it's small, BUT a fish 1.2 lbs. A limit he says, man I would have not guessed it would have taken this long he states.

We see a TFF, KEEB

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX_Y9y5P1K8

Sack So Far 5 Fish 5.7 lbs

12:56
Clint catches a small bass on a beaver that will not help his sack it's in a little deeper water.

12:58
I turn on the camera to talk to Clint about his last fish when this happens. ( see below )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCZ4uEelNXw

Hey nothing to write home about, but a catch on a video is always cool.

Clint comments on the amount of boat traffic on Hubbard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRJc4NoAK64

He fishes Chandler out and moves back to Harbor Bay.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2ALpWzYs7o

1:20
He arrives at Harbor Bay and goes back to the drop off he found earlier.

1:28
While fishing a area that has a rock point/drop off and Tire reefs, he sets the hook on another small fish, using the sprayed grass beaver.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDzn_XJhC24

Clint finishes his last 30 minutes with 3 break offs and a good idea of how tough Hubbard really can be.

2:00
We get back to the ramp and load up the boat.

Clint gives a fast run down of his " Day On The Water "

Good job. You can tell Clint really had to work for the bites. The perserverence paid off for him in spite of a tough day. Good job spreading the videos in through the report. You're getting better with each review.

Hey, he was in MY cove! He should have tried fishing from the bank! smile I know there are keeper fish in there. Although lately, it's been a bit tougher. Way to fight through it Clint. Great job as usual Casey. Made me feel a bit better about my many failures at Ole Mother Hubbard. smile

Good write up Casey. Fork spoils us rotten. It is the only lake I have ever fished that your best five for the day can weigh an estimated 25# and you can be somewhat disappointed because you didn't catch a "big" fish. woot

Excellent videos and write-up Casey.

As usual Ray Hubbard proved tough. On the second day of a summer weekend the boat traffic and fishing pressure can make for a tough day. Way to grind out a limit. Clint, your choice of fishing areas was very skilled. Any of the areas that you fished could have given you a 1 pounder or a 20 pound sack. I thank you for the insights you were able to share on the videos.

This is so typical of Hubbard. If you grind out a limit and are fortunate to get one or two big bites you can go from way back in the pack to tournament hero real quick.

My “Day on the Water” at Lake Ray Hubbard

I have to back up a month or so and tell you when I found out that I was going to be fishing Lake Ray Hubbard for Casey. Texas is full of great bass fisheries and I have fished most of them. When Casey asked me if I had ever fished R.Hubbard I answered not yet, only drove over it going into Dallas on I-30. I had never heard much about it other than it can be tough bass fishing, but great white bass / striper fishing. So now I am four weeks away from my trip and its time to start researching. Being a Guide on Lake Fork, I have lots of folks call me about tips, location, patterns etc. and I am always glad to help folks out, many here on the TFF can attest to that. So the first thing I thought of, I will just call all the Lake Ray Hubbard (Bass) Guides and I’ll be good to go. That is when I quickly found out that there is not a single Bass fishing guide on this lake and the striper guides all said it for good reason, bass fishing is tough here. Ok, now I know that a challenge is ahead. So I called some clients and friends from that area, nothing. So all I had was Google earth and a 20 year old topographical map that my father had from years ago. I thought, it sure would be great if someone asked about the fishing on this lake just before my trip, as a post here on the TFF. My wish came true and two TFF members got on with that exact question within two weeks of my departure. Between the two posts there were over 30 replies telling these two anglers to drive by it, the fishing is terrible, no one ever catches anything there etc. This did not help any at all and really discouraged me. But, I took what little knowledge I could find and came up with a game plan, GPS on my console marked and everything.
So now I needed a place to stay in the area because I hate driving early. After placing a post about this I had four immediate PM’s from other TFF’ers inviting me into their homes for the night. For this I am very thankful. I took up the invitation from a gentleman named Michael (Keeb). Upon arrival at his really nice home I started rigging up for the next morning. Michael and Gary were not allowed to give up much information but did tell me that they knew the lake very well and agreed that it is one of the toughest there is to figure out. Great, just what I needed to hear. After a little more fishing talk we called it a night as we had to get up early.
Waking at 3:00 am by thunder and lightning was not good, could not go back to sleep. Stayed awake the rest of the night and little after 5:00 am Keeb was up and at em. I followed him to the lake where we met Casey. My initial impression of Casey was that he was very professional and ready to start this journey. He started by giving me a little confidence, “Don’t worry, you will catch fish”. He said this throughout the day.
As we idle out past the no wake bouys I realize my GPS is down, worked the day before. Everything I had saved for the day was not accessible, ouch! I am used to navigating a lake full of timber so I told him, “I know you are not allowed to help me today, but please don’t let me kill us running”. He said no worries and off we went to my first spot. My game plan was to start out looking for a spot within a spot. Try to target small key areas that looked fishy and move on. This paid off quickly, caught a fish on one of my first five casts. Casey then said, “It is not that easy out here”. The rest of my day is very descriptive in Casey’s article and as you read, not that easy out there!
I had to fish very hard in what I feel were very good looking areas to catch the few fish I did. As a matter of fact, I cannot remember when I have fished that hard on any body of water for only a few bites. But, I have to say that Hubbard is now one of my favorite lakes, maybe not for bass fishing, but the bikinis…Just kidding! It really is a beautiful lake and really neat to fish. From the color of the water to the homes, marina, rip rap etc. it is just really neat. But, after spending eight hours on it, I know why there are zero bass fishing guides on it. With as much money in that area, a Guide could make a killing, too.
I sure did enjoy spending the day with Casey. I pray that his articles go far and succeed beyond his dreams.
I am looking forward to the “Day on the Water” tournament at the end of the year. I hope it is on a lake that Casey feels a huge bite can be found, so I don’t have to work that hard ever again.
