was just wondering, are gaspergoos good to eat, not from the area and was not sure if they were good or not.

They are basically a Black drum living in Fresh water. Black drum is a very good eating fish, so gaspergoo should be too. Alot of people fish for them in Mathis Lake (Lake CC).

However, all I can say is gasperGOOROOS!!!!!!

Yeah, Freshwater Drum are excellent eating fish.

I tried one a few years ago. Very greasy fish. Terrible, never again. I'll stick to catfish and crappie.

They are OK. As A kid we would set gill nets and catch them and buffalo for fish fries. Cut them up in chunks or strips to fry. They are not too bad!

Sure you got the right fish? Lol. All the Freshwater Drum I've had have very firm, white, non-greasy meat, muc like a saltwater fish. Makes catfish look like a pile of slime lol.

Maybe yours was too big and old?

ive had some good ones and some like mentioned above (greasy) .guess it all depends . i like catfish but some of them had alot of yellow fat on them even if they arent that big .... i guess its like anything you can get a bad batch and you never know when it will be

you cook em on 600F for 6 hours on a hickory plank, throw away the gasper and eat the plank....

Freshwater Drum in my opinion are some of the prettiest fish in Texas and they taste great. And they can get very big as well! Eat the smaller ones, under 5lbs for best texture.

Gaspergoo are good eating fish. They taste kind of like large mouth bass to me. I have been slayin them(yes i target gaspergoo sometimes) for the past two weeks at the stillhouse spillway using night crawlers and small live crawfish, I think they spawning. Anyone ever heard of a gasper goo run?

I have heard them called pearl-heads cause they have a round stone-like thing in their head that must be removed or they become uneatable. Don't know if it is true.

Lol, it's half true. The males do have stone-like structures in their heads, which I believe are called Otoliths. But they don't effect the meat in any way whether or not you remove them.

they eat good, just a bit bony. make sure when you clean them to check for thin hairlike bones by the rib cage.

You sure you have the right fish? I've filleted a lot of Freshwater Drum, and I've never found any extra bones. They fillet up just like a giant crappie or white bass.

yea catch them all the time at the Whitney Dam...its not bad it just seems to me like their line of bones around the rib cage extend a bit out further. basically i find thin hairlike bones sometimes.

I find them best eaten fresh. If frozen they become a bit like rubber after a thaw and fry.

Drum are great eating. Avoid big skinny sunken eyed ones and the obese ones. The muscular ones from moving current are best. They are often confused with buffalo which have tiny intermuscular bones. They do have the small bones beside the ribs just like crappie, bass, and the other sunfish and white bass. They have, like other fish, otoliths (rocks in they head), but they are much more developed than in other fish and easier to find, but you still have to know where to look. If you ever snorkeled below a tailrace, you see them sometimes stacked up gill to gill against the concrete walls and structures really thick.........If you have a fish fry at the queen's tea party, even, and slip some drum in there with the crappie. The knaves and even the queen probably won't notice.

I ate some fresh water drum once because my buddy said they tasted great. I wasn't impressed. It was very fishy tasting. I guess if you get a small one it will taste ok. I will stick to hybrids, stripers and walleye.
