Hey badarsebaits,

I've never fished Tickey Creek, but have fished a small cove right south of there and have caught some nice bass. Hey Robin remember that morning I caught a nice bass there, and then some sandbass started blowing up.. yes, that cove....

But anyway, that area should be good too. Lavon has some nice fish, but sometimes you have to cover a good amount of water to find them. But as you would expect, fish early and around cover.

Also fish rocky areas. Those produce well too.

I do remember that well. But I had no idea at all where we were other than "on Lavon" smile

Keeping the thread going on here...

I'm in E. Texas this weekend, at the inlaws place at Holly Lake Ranch. Fishing was surprisingly pretty good this morning. I didn't do very good last year when I fished this lake in the summer, but today was pretty good. Caught 5 bass on a yellow popper on my 4wt, biggest around 2#, and another 2# on a brown and white-rubber-legged eelworm streamer

I found a new little lake in Plano yesterday and went tubing there this morning. (Note: it is ONLY accessible with a tube, no bank fishing) I started off at daylight with my usual #1 chartruese Peck's Popper. By 7:30 I had caught seven bass up to 3#. I then switched to a 4" plastic worm so that I could fish the heavy vegetation, and caught two more nice bass and three green sunfish.

What weight of fly rod are you guys generally using for bass?
I'm a beginner and I'm having trouble casting bass flies with my 6wt.

I use a 8 weight to cast BIG bugs for bass, you may have better luck on 6 weight by using 7 wt line on it, I have done that with good results.

I use a 9', 6/7-wt St Croix fly rod with a 7-wt SA Mastery Series GPX Weight-Forward line. It casts the #1 Peck's Poppers very well.

Robin,
Nighttime fishing is pretty tough so close to the summer solstice... since it gets dark after 9PM... so to do some night fishing, you probably need to start after 10PM, and lately I just rather fish in the early mornings.

I do most of my nighttime bass fishing in August, Sept, and Oct when it gets dark a bit earlier.

I tried again this evening, but didn't get anything... But I probably only fished for 30 minutes or so.

Went back to the same lake this morning and caught eleven more bass up to 4#. I started off with a #1 chartruese peck's Popper and caught three bass up to 3/4#. Then I put on one of Dale's chartruese Tarpon Toads and caught a nice 2 1/2#. Then I switched to a deers hair topwater and caught a 1 1/2#. It seemed like the bass had turned off so I went and got my 7' - 3-wt bream rod and put on one of the Green Weenies Dale tied and promptly caught a 3/4# bass. After one or two bream, I caught a real nice 4# bass, that was fun on a 3-wt!! I caught four more bass on that green weenie, 2#, 1# and two little dinks. I also caught about a dozen bluegill, about 7-8", one longear, one 7" shad, and countless little green sunfish.

I had the pleasure of sharing my boat with Kelly (kelkay) today. We harrassed quite a few sunfish and a couple bass with our fly rods. The cat is now out of the bag as far as my technique goes (I manage to get a fly out there AND look bad doing it at the same time)., but she didn't laugh (hard) at my casting so she's welcome to join me any time.

Yes I finally made it to the famous lake to see Mike's stomping grounds out there. We caught several sunnies, and Mike caught a few bass. Poor 'ol me didn't get a bass this time around. Mike can cast just fine, don't let him kid ya. It is such a pleasure to fly fish with someone, which I have never done until now. If you have a chance to fish with him, it will be a great time. The lake was not too hot later this afternoon until evening, in fact it was a little cool. To top it off he caught a Redbreast sunfish...which I have yet to do. I will definitely be going back. We talked about having the fly fishing crew at TFF maybe meeting up around Broken Bow this fall. It is a blast to fish with someone from the TFF that you have spoken to, and never met yet. So we should all get together when the weather is nicer, for those that can come, and want to!

Went to a little lake in Plano this morning and caught one little dink bass on a popper. So I switched to my bream rod and a green weenie and caught two little bluegill. I put on one of Dale's LSU cap spiders (I thought that the bream might want to be part of a winning team) and caught about twenty-five 5-8" bluegill, two 8" coppernose bluegill, one 9" redear, one beautiful 8" hybrid redear/green sunfish and one 14 1/2" crappie that weighed almost 2#. They wanted the fly deep and slow this morning, and the cap spider did its job.

I went tubing at what is rapidly becoming my favorite little lake in Plano this morning and started off with my usual - a #1, chartruese Peck's Popper. I used it for 45 minutes without a hit and was about to change it for something else, when I caught a little dink bass on it. In the next 15-20 minutes I caught three more bass on it - 4#, 3#, and 3/4#. I switched to a clouser a little later and caught one more 3/4# bass. Then I got my 3-wt and put one of Dale's LSU cap spiders on it and caught two more bass under 1#, 25 or so bream and one beautifully colored 9 1/2" redear/green sunfish hybrid.

Well I made A cap spider this evening. I have a little trouble making the legs look right. I also painted some popper bodies, but they didn't come out the way I wanted them too either. So I gave up for the evening, and will probably work on them tomorrow. I am sure the fish don't mind if the paint isn't real smooth...lol. I tried to use a fine pointed paint marker, and also bought Tester spray paint. The spray paint bubbled on me. It was much faster though, that is for sure. I had made a couple of poppers with jig paint, but that looks nice, but it is a bit thick when you dip it. I guess I will keep experimenting with it.

hey Kelly great minds think alike...I was workin on some poppers untill my frustration became too much, so I went to the lake...it was hot, very hot the bass have pretty much moved to deeper water & the topwater bite isn't nearly as good as it was a couple weeks ago, the smaller bass are schooling & busting shad and are ready to bite as long as you can stay with a school, also had a gar on this evening but on his second jump he pulled free.

Very nice fish there Mike. I cannot imagine how hot it must of been fishing yesterday. I want to GO, but then I think of that heat, and I stay at the house. I am trying to get up earlier...but when I get up, it is basically already hot outside. I am ready for fall already..LOL. Yes the paint job on the poppers was discouraging. One thing that didn't help is I was doing that outside about 7pm or so, and sweat was just dripping off of me. I was not working out...just sitting in a chair painting these poppers. I find that if my fly making is not up to par, I will stop and come back to it later. Usually that helps. But, if I stay and try to force things to get better without that break, things can get even uglier, including my mood.......whew. I am a perfectionist in some areas, and this is pretty much one of them. I know the fish don't care. But I see other people's work...(sometimes even my own better work)...and it drives me to do better. If they aren't too ugly I had planned to give you couple of them....plus whatever else I thought you might like ....a red brassie maybe? Oh well, today I will try it again, and see what happens. :-)
