heres the deal, i got a new 6600bcx i picked up cheap and loaded it with 20lbs mono line and want to know what some of you think will happen to the reel while tied into a 25lbs plus ling or kingfish. i have caught bigger ling and kingfish on bigger tackle that put a butt whipping on me, so this should be a riot. going offshore next week and will see what will happen. i know you can chase a ling or kingfish , but if we are tied up to a rig we will not untie just to chase a fish. think it will spool me? smoke the reel? whats the worst that can happen? lets do a gentlemens bet on what will happen for a grand prize to the winner of nothing? hopefully i will have some pics of a nice fish to post and not of a smoked reel????

Good chance you can get a kingfish in. Don't know about the ling, they are a different beast. After a kings first run they usually peter out pretty quick, but then I had one that whipped me 2 weeks ago and broke me off at the boat on 40lb line so who knows. It was a touch bigger than 25lbs though.

my biggest kingfish is a 30lbs and a 27lbs on a speedmaster with 40lbs mono. the 30lbs almost spooled me. i've caught ling up to 77lbs and not a big deal, but i've caught ling in the 35lbs to 50lbs range that kicked my butt. i just wonder whats going to happen to the reel. not really worried about the reel, but it would be nice if it holds up???? tthanks

You can catch them but, if you do it often the reel will be junk.

I would make sure my drag was set properly, probably no more than 10lbs with 20lb mono.

You might also spool it with braid so you can put a lot more line on it. Something like 30lb power pro has the same diameter as 8lb mono!

Use a mono or flourocarbon leader on it before your kingfish rig for shock.
