I propose a casting competition to take place in September. I propose this time because it will be slightly cooler and Richard will be here by that time.
I propose the competition to take place somewhere between Irving and Carrolton as that seems to be middle ground for most of us.
I propose the following categories and requirements;
CARP ROD OVERHEAD DISTANCE CAST (RESTRICTED) * This cast is an overhead, or over shoulder cast, rather than a side swinging style cast. * The lead must NOT be in motion when the cast begins. * The maximum or less requirements are 12' 3.5 tc or less (must be recognized as a carp rod) paired with a 3 ounce or less lead. * Each competitor will be allowed 5 consecutive casts of which the longest cast will be counted. * This contest will determine who can overhead cast using equipment restrictions. These restrictions focus primarily on technique and equipment selection and secondarily on power.
CARP ROD OVERHEAD DISTANCE CAST (UNRESTRICTED) * This cast is an overhead, or over shoulder cast, rather than a side swinging style cast. * The lead must NOT be in motion when the cast begins. * There are no maximum or less requirements. * The rod must be recognized as a carp rod. * Each competitor will be allowed 5 consecutive casts of which the longest cast will be counted. * This contest will determine who can cast the carp kit of their choice the greatest distance. Equipment selection, technique, and power will all determine the outcome.
CARP ROD OVERHEAD DISTANCE CAST (STANDARD) * This cast is an overhead, or over shoulder cast, rather than a side swinging style cast. * The lead must NOT be in motion when the cast begins. * The rod, reel, and line will be provided for all competitors to use. * Each competitor will be allowed 5 consecutive casts of which the longest cast will be counted. * This contest will determine who can cast the same rod, reel, line, and lead combo farther. This removes the variable of equipment selection so that only technique and power will determine the winner.
CARP ROD FREESTYLE DISTANCE CAST (RESTRICTED) * Any style of cast is permitted so long as it is unassisted.
CARP ROD FREESTYLE DISTANCE CAST (UNRESTRICTED) * Any style of cast is permitted so long as it is unassisted. * There are no maximum or less requirements. * The rod must be recognized as a carp rod. * Each competitor will be allowed 5 consecutive casts of which the longest cast will be counted. * This contest will determine who can cast the carp kit, of their choice, the greatest distance. Equipment selection, technique, and power will all determine the outcome.
CARP ROD FREESTYLE DISTANCE CAST (STANDARD) * Any style of cast is permitted so long as it is unassisted. * There are no maximum or less requirements. * The rod must be recognized as a carp rod.
SHORE CASTING/SPINNING ROD FREESTYLE DISTANCE CAST (UNRESTRICTED) * Any style of cast is permitted so long as it is unassisted. * There are no maximum or less requirements. * The rod must be recognized as a shore casting/spinning rod. * Each competitor will be allowed 5 consecutive casts of which the longest cast will be counted. * This contest will determine who can cast the shore casting spinning combo, of their choice, the greatest distance. Equipment selection, technique, and power will all determine the outcome.
CARP/SHORE ROD 50 YARD ACCURACY CAST * Any style of cast is permitted so long as it is unassisted. * The equipment must be recognized as shore or carp gear. * Each competitor will be allowed 5 casts of which the goal will be to cast as closely to the marker as possible on each cast. * Out of the 5 casts the closest and the farthest from the marker will be excluded. The 3 remaining casts will be counted and averaged. The lowest measurement average wins.
CARP/SHORE ROD 100 YARD ACCURACY CAST * Any style of cast is permitted so long as it is unassisted.
BASS, SPINNING ROD, FREESTYLE DISTANCE CAST * Any rod, recognized as a bass spinning rod measuring 7' 6" or less, is permitted. * Any style of cast or size of lead is permitted. * Each competitor will be allowed 5 consecutive casts of which the longest cast will be counted. * This contest will determine who can cast the bass spinning gear, of their choice, the greatest distance. Equipment selection, technique, and power will all determine the outcome.
BASS, CASTING ROD, FREESTYLE DISTANCE CAST * Any rod, recognized as a bass spinning rod measuring 7' 6" or less, is permitted. * Any style of cast or size of lead is permitted. * Each competitor will be allowed 5 consecutive casts of which the longest cast will be counted. * This contest will determine who can cast the bass casting gear, of their choice, the greatest distance. Equipment selection, technique, and power will all determine the outcome.
BASS, SPINNING ROD, 20 YARD ACCURACY CAST * Any style of cast is permitted so long as it is unassisted. * The equipment must be recognized as bass spinning gear. * Each competitor will be allowed 5 casts of which the goal will be to cast as closely to the marker as possible on each cast. * Out of the 5 casts the closest and the farthest from the marker will be excluded. The 3 remaining casts will be counted and averaged. The lowest measurement average wins.
BASS, SPINNING ROD, 40 YARD ACCURACY CAST * Any style of cast is permitted so long as it is unassisted.
BASS, CASTING ROD, 20 YARD ACCURACY CAST * Any style of cast is permitted so long as it is unassisted. * The equipment must be recognized as bass casting gear. * Each competitor will be allowed 5 casts of which the goal will be to cast as closely to the marker as possible on each cast. * Out of the 5 casts the closest and the farthest from the marker will be excluded. The 3 remaining casts will be counted and averaged. The lowest measurement average wins.

The 3 remaining casts will be counted and averaged. The lowest measurement average wins.
If these categories and requirments are widely accepted I will accept the responsibility and burden of organizing this event.

Maybe we should add a category for accuracy? Both for carp and bass gear. Some of those bass fishers are scary accurate. That's a good idea. You could invite bass anglers and have both distance and accuracy competitions, with several categories for rod length and reel type. It also would provide a way for everyone to see how the other half lives.

What about a Barbie-rod competition? Brett, if you actually drive to the event, we will have a Barbie rod competition. lol That actually would be fun to watch kids with themed gear.

This sounds like fun. My concern is that not everyone has rods that will cast great distances. Will there be a standard rod that everyone can use? Will some have an advantage using better gear?

Allow 13' rods. Or whatever you normally cast with.
I won't be competing, but those who do compete, should be allowed to use whatever rod they wish, or whatever they usually cast with.

Ok, allow me to explain why there are 3 different classes for the carp rod competition.
There are 3 major factors involved in a cast.
1. Equipment selection is a factor. Selecting the right rod, reel, line, & lead combo, FOR YOU, is a factor.
2. Technique is a factor. Some of us were not born with brute strength but have practiced technique a lot. Think Sandy Koufax.
3. Your strength, or power, is a factor. For some of us this factor is primary.
The three different classifications are designed so that everyone has an angle to compete with.

Did you just compare yourself to Sandy Koufax? Awesome!!! No way, no sir! But I will compare Richard to Sandy Koufax. They both are shaped like angel hair pasta yet they can both do some incredible things. Richard casts a method ball farther than I have ever seen anyone cast a lead. I expect him to win most, if not all, of the distance events.

Make it easy, just have a 1 distance comp, don't matter which rod, or line test, everyone attaches on the same lead weight when it's their turn to cast. K.I.S.S. A lot of folks would like it to be that simple. The problem is that it would create a lot of excuses. Some excuses will be, "I would have done better if I was casting my own." or "I can cast a 12' better than a 13'" or "I'm not used to braided line." or "I always cast a 4 ounce lead." Having a restricted, unrestricted, and a standardized contest, as you suggest, will answer most, if not all, of these questions and eliminate excuses.
