Man, I am horrible at identifying snakes. That looks like a cobra to me. Every snake I see is either a rattler, if rattlers are present, or a Cobra if no rattlers. Of course they have to die because they are poisonous.

Not a great plains rat snake. Very similar, but a more common sub species of the great plains rat snake.. The Texas Rat snake, more commonly referred to as Copperhead or Rattlesnake by folks who run when they see it LOL. When young they are identical in coloration to a great plains, but the texas rat snake looses a lot of its color at it gets older.

What are you going to do with it? I have a nice spot ready for him. Was looking for a redtail boa, but would love a nice rat snake also.

Nice to see not everyone kills snakes just for existing! They're truly awesome critters and help keep rodent populations down. Unfortunately, plenty of ingorant people out there think they're all poisonous, or all somehow out to get them personally. We all know it's actually the killer rabbits we have to look out for!

Yes, Texas Rat Snake. Notice the yellow and red markings between pattern markings.

I take pictures of all the snakes I catch and let them go. I have tons of Gray Rat Snakes by my house. I liked this one 'cause his colors were clear.

This is my Royal (ball) Python, Paris. She has been my baby for about 5 years now. The boy is still a bit nervous of holding her!

We ran over one near our deer lease in Southeastern Oklahoma last week and it was probably 6'!!!!!!! I seriously doubt it was a copperhead, if that's what you're saying. Most people misidentify rat/bull/chicken snakes and all their variations for copperheads. You'll rarely ever see a copperhead longer than 3 feet. In fact, 3 feet is a huge copperhead. This snake doesn't at all look like a copperhead. A copperhead's color can be anything from tan to almost red to dark brown. Sometimes they have very pronounced striping and sometimes they appear to be almost a solid color. Some have an iridescence bluish color to them. Instead of color, pay attention to a heart/triangle shaped head and a blunt tail. As far as a cottonmouth is concerned, you're usually looking at a diamondback water snake, the most common water snake in Texas. You can usually smell them before you see them, unless one is just swimming by I guess. And as far as killing them, the more non-poisonous beneficial snakes you kill the more non-beneficial poisonous snakes you're going to have.

I had one of those little Rat Snakes fall on me when I opened my front door one morning to head out to work. I grabed him and tossed him back into the front bushes of my house. The only thing I don't like about the snakes is that he was probably trying to get to the barn swallows that nest under my front porch. The snakes on my property really like to get into the bird houses I have around after baby birds in the spring. I had one snake last year that took some research to figure out what it was and it turned out to be a Mud snake. Not too common around these parts that I know of. Really a great looking red colored snake. He burrowed around the bottom of my foundation and would stick his head out. I haven't seen that snake this year. Like others have said, give me a snake any day over rats and rodents.
