I see the Vandaminator cranks with Fluoro, just curious on how many of you all do the same? I know it would be pricey!

I have been cranking with fluoro for the past few months. I really like it. The line doesn't stretch so I have better hookups. Less lost fish.
I have even beet trowing topwater frogs with Fluoro without problems. Fluoro is supposed to sink and not be good for topwater but it isn't a big problem in my opinion.

It is all I use but I use it as a leader to the bait from 20# Suffix Braid. For me a spool of stiff Flourocarbon is a pain in the rear especialy when throwing smaller lighter baits. Also if I want to change the running characteristics of a bait or throw a C'baits into heavier cover all I have to do is change out the 6' or so leader not the entire line on the spool. Also if I want a bait to run deeper I can shorten or remove the leader and the extremely small diameter of the braid lets me do that.

14# Gamma for me. You can really tell the difference in feel between mono and flouro. Feel lost with mono vibration wise. Flouro will spoil you quick on feeling vibration from a crank.

I started using 12# fluoro this year for deep diving cranks and it really makes a difference in getting the bait down deep. More feel and better hook-ups. I don't think I will go back to mono for deep cranks.

I don't even use Mono at all anymore. Fluoro and braid ONLY now. Fluoro has spoiled my. I flip using 2olb Triline 100% Fluoro. It is so much more sinsitive, stronger, doesn't strech and TOTALLY abrasion resisant.
I flipped the willows and heavy vegitation on T-wok this past weekend. I used fluoro more than the braid. Never had a problem.
If you try it, you won't go back to mono. I did try the co-polymer for a while last year. Didn't totally care for it.

Doesn't XPS 14 seem thick for cranking? Depends on your conditions, water clairity and lure size. It should be ok for all around fishing but you might want to downsize if the water is really clear. 14 Fluoro is already a smaller diameter, probably close to 10-12 lb dia. Also if you are trying to "Hyper Crank" you might have to go to 8 lb if you want to realllllly get that extra depth, but you have to have lots of nerve and a more limber rod to crank big cranks on that smaller diameter.

Would you crank with 12 on a lake like fork? Seems like youu would have a heart attack on every fish! You've got to have some REALLY Big ones to survive cranking on Fork in the Timber!!! Probably have to eat Zanex like Chicklet Candy! But,there are some places that you can get by with 12 Fluoro that don't have much timber. Underwater ledges & humps. Here is a good link with some general deep cranking info from "THE Crankbait Man" Paul Elias. http://bassfan.com/tips_article.asp?id=265

(These are all relative to brands.) Mono- More stretch, larger diameter. Floats. Good All around. Has Memory. Fluorocarbon- Less stretch, smaller diameter. Sinks. Not best for spining reels. Less Memory. Some of the better ones (personal opinion) Gamma Edge, Seguar, BPS. Braid- Least (No) Stretch, smallest diameter. Easily cut on rocks, floats with wind.Makes noise when cast (Friction!!!). Each has a place in fishing. You just have to be willing to use each in certain situations to gain the slight advantage of the lines. Also, not much is spoken about using the smaller diameter slick coated braids for cranking. They will work but they have casting drawbacks with lighter lures.

I for the smaller diameter lines I prefer a blood knot and an albright knot for larger diameter. Both will work and I put a small drop of super glue on the knot and tag ends. When glue dries use nail clippers to cut tag ends flush with the knot. It will be rare that either of these knots fail before somewhere else does.

10-14 pound Seaguar with a braid knot. If I am cranking mid depth (8-14') heavy cover I'll use 20 pound fluorocarbon.

12 lb Seaguar FC on my cranking stick. Be aware that FC does stretch, but since it is denser than Mono the sensitivity more than makes up for it.

12lbs BPS fluorocarbon for most crankbaits, and 17lb fluorocarbon for rattle traps.
I boated my personal best (12.97) on fork with 10lb berkley xl, in the trees in penson. The ex-guide I was with just about had a heartattack when I told him I only had 10 lb test. my reels drag and composite cranking rod did the trick.

I use McCoys Mean Green for crankbaits, with a BPS crankin stick rod. I want the softer tip since the fluoro has no stretch. I tie a palomar knot.

On lakes like Fork/Ray Roberts I have used 20 lb. braid for cranks. But most of the time I like 12 lb fluoro.
