before this summer ends I would like to take a day and fish for alligator gar on the Trinity somewhere. I've got some frozen shad in the deep freeze and a musky rod with 80lb braid...has anyone seen them surfacing yet?

Me too. I'd like to target some Gar. I fish out on Eagle Mountain lake but haven't been able to catch one there yet. If you hear of anywhere that we can catch them at, please let me know. I plan on going north to my in-laws who live on the TX/OK border ... right beside the red-river and I saw bunches of them there last year but didn't have anything like the correct tackle. This year I plan on going armed for bear.

I have made up some nylon rope lures in the hopes that will catch some. If you need some company at the trinity for Gar, let me know.

For gator gars your going to need large cuts baits.
I have a picture of my gator gar rig of yall would like to see it. just let me know.

As for the rope lures, they wont work for Alligator gars. Just Longnose gar.

Oh, and if you don't plan to eat the gar, try not to gut hook them.

Horns...I believe that is Haggar right? I've never seen any alligator gar in there...just longnose. Since the Trinity dumps in there I guess you never know though!

I'm a newbie at Gar fishing ... I understand that there are two subspieces ... the long-nose and the aligator ... I see lots of Gar break surface and roll on the surface. For a lake like Eagle Mountain, is there a way I can tell if they are long-nose or aligator?

There are five species of gar in america as far as I know.

Alligator Gar
Longnose Gar
Spotted Gar
Shortnose Gar
Florida Gar (only found in Florida)

Actually, there are four species of Gar in Texas. Longnose, Shortnose, Spotted, and Alligator.

The Spotted Gar is the most common gar in texas, followed by Longnose, Alligator, and Shortnose.

As far as longnose and alligator go, it's easy. Longnose have a long, narrow mouth/snout, Alligator have a shorter, broader one. And get a hell of a lot bigger lol.

As soon as I get back from my fishing trip to Nebraska, we can hook up and try to get some gar. In addition to the Trinity, I know where there is a deep hole in Chambers Creek where I have seen gar surfacing, last time I was catfishing there, I caught some small longnose, but I saw some huge gar roll in the water, I just wasn't targeting them.

I am also down for a a-gar trip I have a couple of ideas as to were to find them

I wish there was a way to find land owners names to seek permission to fish, I KNOW there are gator gar south of Rosser.

There are big gar in the Trinity around where 85 crosses it on the way to 7 points also.

If anyone wants to form an outing hunting for the gar, count me in.

Actually, any Alligator Gar in the DFW trinity system would be very old and probably very big.

I also know exactly where to go to fish for them. About 2 hours south of Dallas. Get a boat big enough for me and let's go get sum Agar! lol..
