Just got back from vacationing in Galveston. While fishing the surf at the state park, somehting brushed up against my lower leg. Not being familiar with saltwater, I reacted (brobably the wrong move) by quickly raising my foot to get it away from whatever. When I did, it bit me hard on the outside of my ankle. Nothing major, scared the [censored] out of me and left several teethmarks around my ankle bone. Bled a bit and hurt like heck but nothing to stop the trip. I'll try to post a pic of the bite.
Is this common? Any idea on what it might have been?

Most likely wasn't a shark smile

If there are a good amount of teeth marks, I would think maybe a Spanish Mackerel.

If only two or so big marks, maybe a Speck.

I've never heard of fish biting out of self defense or anything though.

Are you sure it was not a crab? If the bite marks form an arc on each side of the ankle then it was most likely a fish. But if the bite marks are more less in a straight line, then it was most likely a crab. I have been pinched by many a crab, but do not recall ever being bit by a fish. Some of those pesky little crabs can pinch pretty hard.

TPWD report from last week:
Trout are fair off the spoil banks on croaker. Gafftop, sand trout and whiting are good from the beachfront piers on live bait. Redfish are fair to good on the shell on live shrimp under a popping cork. Trout are fair at night from the beachfront piers on live shrimp and large foot shaped lures.

Might have been a small sand shark....whatever, I would make a visit to the doctor's office ASAP. The risk of baterial infection isn't real high but not worth taking a chance. Folks have died from it. The sooner it is checked the better.

blue fish have been known to attack. However, I dont even know if Galveston gets Blues, plus, they usually travel in schools so if you got bit once, you probably would have been bit a couple of times

FINE! I'll admit it.

I was bored and mad that I wasn't catching any fish and I saw him off in the distance. Snuck around him then went underwaster with my $30 rip off made in china goggles that I got from the local gift shop. When I got a good view of his foot, I latched on, but his fierce kicking was no match for my canines so I swam off to attack the shad.

Sorry about that, but I did have my rabies shots.

Last summer I was "bitten" twice in the surf, the first time was around two toes. Kinda like I kicked whatever it was in the mouth. My guess on it was maybe a small red or something that didn't have cutting teeth.

Then the second time was more of a pinch than a bite, but it was on the tip of the toe. We guessed it was either a crab or some kind of clam that time.

Both were on beaches in Galveston in less than 2' of water.
