release water at night, then low in the am, theytypically start releasing around 4-5:00 each day, so be at a take out point before the water reaches you. lte us know how you do. many of us are going down on the 9th.

I was down there two weeks ago and they released water about 1:00. Like Troutbum said, be at a takeout point when you hear the siren. The water rises fast.

You cant trust the COE page of hourly total releases.
http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/cgi-bin/rcshtml.pl?page=Hydrologic

According to this page they didnt release any water till 8pm, June 15th, however, they released about 2pm and the flow stayed on until at least 6pm. The river does rise fast, and is moving pretty quickly, but as long as you have basic paddling skills you will be fine. there are only a few places where there is any sort of hazard, and those you can walk past on the gravel bar (if it isnt underwater yet!). The fishing is great for about the first 10 minutes of the rising water, then shuts off completely in my experience. Good luck, let us know how it goes, Ill be there again this weekend.

Hey fellas,

Never fished below the damn here; would like to maybe rent a kayak, do a day float, and do some fly fishing. Few questions - is the fishing worth it right now? Are the flows good enough where I won't be carrying my kayak all day? Would it be worth it?

Thanks,

Carl H.

Yes, it should be OK. Come join us on July the 9th, for a full day trip, with many of us from this forum. You can rent a yak from Dick's, on the brazos.

well everyone, you'all missed one hell of a trip. Lot's of fish caught, no wind, and a great day for all. Alex, Derrick, and I, troutbum, fished all day, and had good action most of the day. We caught largemouth, spotted, and sand bass. Along with huge gills, yellow bellies, longears, had a catfish, and a gar on for a moment. Alex tested his Orvis waterproof fly box. It failed the test, bummer for him, and his flies. I think he is going to sue Orvis, for bad advertising. We will have to do this again. Thanks guys!!

wet duck, from what I saw, and with visiting with Derrick, the yaks do better. glide better, easier to portage, or drag, and handled well. just my 2 cents. but the new pedal drive native that is now on the market, if you got the dough!!

Had a great time with you guys on the river. We cought alot of fun fish. I am unhappy with loosing my NOT WATERPROOF fly box, but realy happy derik spotted it in the watervon the way back. The flies are worse for the wear. Oh well guess ill have to replace them. Darn, maybe i need some crack whiskers (catswhiskers). Man those worked well for you, hugh buddy.
