Might want to post this in off topic. You will probably get more responses.

Go to add/remove programs in your control panel. I was able to remove it that way. Also, I use Norton 2006 for virus protection. I upgraded that and it (Antivirus 2008) hasnt come back.

It is a VERY annoying popup.

Thanks for the tip, I tried to remove it but it kept coming back everytime I rebooted. So I restored the system and so far so good! My McAfee doesn't seem to be doing its job.UGH. Thanks teg38! (got your pm)

And annoying is an understatement, it was driving me crazy!

Get rid of McAfee and stay away from Symantec products. Go out to www.grisoft.com and downloud AVG. It has a very small footprint on the system and is not a resource hog. If you are going to purchase an AV program, then I would go with NOD32.

I second Keeb's suggestion. Fought with that one last week and AVG removed it and many others.

Tracy,
AVG or grisoft gets my vote also. I have been using the free version for years without any problems.
Just make it a habit to update daily either manual or by automatic update.

It's a good program. The free version of Zone Alarm will stop the popups.

I also have the free version of AVG and it works better than the Norton's that I use to have. Mine automatically updates each day my computer is turned on and have had no problems.

Go to www.Grisoft.com (Home security) and get the free trial version of AVG 08 and then get www.Spybot.com

Both will get rid of the virus, Adware and Trojans..
They also will advise you if anyone is trying to Hack into your computer.

Bazz cheers

Ive had the free version of avg for a year. If you don't u grade to the pay version after a year you keep getting a msg that your system is in danger. What happens is the auto update disappears and you have to do it manually. Not a big problem, just trying to remember to do it is bothersome. Paid $50 for Norton for a while but didn't care for it.
Also switched to PC Tools Firewall plus.
Started having major problems with IE and downloaded Mozilla Firefox.

That pretty much cleared up my problems except now I can not download a newer version of Yahoo chat. I can download but computer will not install it. Oh well. I'll figure it out some day.

I too have heard great things about ESET NOD32. I am trying it out now. I have a backdoor trojan though, that it has not found. I am disappointed in all antivirus paid programs now. Kapersky might be alright. I have used Bit Defender and Dr. Web, both allowed my computer to get infected without finding the culprit, and I stopped the programs after that. It takes more than one program nowadays to get by. Try Superantispyware Free Edition as a backup as well. AVG is supposed to be also good for a free program. Good luck.

you might want to update your virus defs, disconnect the pc from your network and then run the scan. This will keep any trojan from reaching out on the net and grabbing new executables.

If that doesn't get it, you may want to try going back to a restore point from a time before you got the trojan. That would obviously only be applicable if you have restore points that far back.

There are a few other things that you could do but would end up being time consuming and a lengthy message to type. If your infection is bad, you may want to consider wiping the machine and reloading. In some cases you will spend more time trying to resolve the issue than it's worth, and end up with a butchered OS to go along with it.

If you go that route, make sure you have good backups of your data.

I have been working with someone on Geeks To Go, for quite some time actually. I don't know if all is well right now or not. The computer was very slow browsing...then not long back it sped up after we got rid of some infections. Then it slowed BACK DOWN>..and now it is faster. So I am hoping we are at the point of the light at the end of the tunnel on this thing. I am a patient person usually, but this has been going on long enough. I would HATE to wipe my hd and start all over. Just adding the updates alone and all that would be a major time consumer in itself... thanks for your advice...

I had the same thing last week and after running spybot it would reinstall itsself. It even blocked my restore dates. talked to IT guy and ended up reformatting hard drive. The good news was everything I copied to disc was clean when I loaded it. I now have AVG and so far so good. Downloads.com has AVG and Spybot.

Had a similar problem with Antivirus 2009 (what a stupid name) and found a free download to get rid of it.
download Malwarebytes then install and run a scan that cleans but takes a looonnnnggg time.

I use Malwarebytes, and it is a good free program, but it does not always get everything cleaned. I finally got my computer clean, and it was a very long process. I am now using a new firewall, and av program. All I can say is SCAN a lot. Most people think they are clean, and I even had two top notch av programs miss an infection, so it can happen, and does.

You are correct about being able to get caught by something. Antivirus programs normally only get definition updates one to two times a week. When a new virus hits the internet, most AV companies are reactive to the new threats.

There are a couple of AV products out there that have better heuristics capabilities and can detect virus signatures or patterns within data packets.

The best protection that one has is to be smart about what they open (email), what web sites visited (dont go places you shouldnt be) and what files they may place on their pc that originated else where other than on your pc.

Little programs that people like to down load of the net for free (weatherbug, web toolbars and such) usually have holes in them to allow spyware on to your machine. Some cutesy screen saver programs do the same.

Point being the more of that junk that you put on your pc's that you don't need to do what your computer is intended for, you are taking that chance of getting a virus, spyware-malware, pop ups, data loggers or any one of many malicious items that are out there.

Use your pc's. just think before you click.

NOD32 has one of the best detection engines built into it. They also have definition updates more times throughout the week than most other mainstream retail vendors (i.e. Symantec)

Also, NOD32 (Eset) and AVG (Grisoft) have much quicker response times to new viruses that are detected on the internet when they hit. Usually within 10 to 18 hours as opposed to 24 to 36 hours by some other vendors.

I did notice the other day that AVG has grown in popularity enough that they no longer offer a free downloadable version of their AV. People must be catching on the McAfee and Symantec are not as good as once thought. They do their job to an extent but are slow on definition updates and responses to newly detected threats.

I tried Kaspersky lately too, the 7.0 version of KAV. I liked it, but it had way too many questions for me to try and answer, and I did not get it because of that. Plus scans take forever. I was told I should try another type, the internet suite version, cannot remember the name. But I did not want to use their firewall, as I just purchased another firewall. They said the internet suite would be much easier for me to use. I was willing to try it with their firewall cut off, but never got a response back from them about trying it out...I was on a trial of it only a few days when I tried to switch the trial over to the internet suite. Oh well....thats how it goes I guess. Anyone wanting to try NOD32 be aware that they said it was a 30 day trial, but it was not for me. When I complained nothing got done about it. I was pretty ticked, and almost didn't buy the product because they misrepresented their trial period. I forgot if it was two weeks, or what...but it was definitely NOT 30 days. Maybe because I complained they changed it to a full 30 days now, I have no idea.

If I had to go with a free one, I heard it was a good one. But I prefer to go with a paid one, that way I can complain if it isn't doing it's job. If I don't pay I have no right to complain...lol. Kind of like voting, isn't it?
