GREAT idea! Very nice-looking fly. How does the paint hold up when the foam gets mashed around?

Those earplugs also make dandy permanent-temporary patches for small .22 sized holes in a boat that were made by a previous owner!
I was actually thinking about how those would work for a popper the other day when using them for the purpose stated above. I would think they would be very durable with the possible exception of paint applied to them as was mentioned earlier.

Sweet! Sharpies....another great idea.
Have you tied any backwards to make a slider instead of a popper?

Is it closed-cell? If so, you should be fine. Have you fished them yet?

Nope, Just made the first one today (Sunday). I guess I could use dry fly treatment or anything that repels water..

How to tie one. Run the hook through the foam Secure the back Tie in the tail feathers and make them spray apart Tie in some hackle and secure with whip knots color the top Color the bottom Color the front Attach and color the Eyes There you have it a finished "Ear Plug Bass Bug"

A buddy gave me some camo earplugs a year or so ago. I need to dig them out, they would make cool bugz!!!

But if your bugs wear camo, how can the fish see them?
I bump into guys all the time when I go to Bass Pro or Cabela's. They're wearing their camo and become invisible.

Yep it works But I'll have to make a few more because this little bass decided it wanted my fly and swam off with it I gotta check my knot! HLS, you do some great fly tying. And I got to agree with you, if that little bass stole your fly, you really need to work on your knots. For a great fly tier like you, that shouldn't be a problem. May I suggest you start using a non-slip mono loop for 90% of your fly fishing, and a Palomar knot for the 10% or so where you specifically do not want the extra action of a loop knot.

HLS, your imagination just astounds me. Who would of ever thought of ear plugs for a popper? Wow. I really have to hand it to you, you are one heck of a fly tier. I'm gonna have to try that. Where did you get those plugs anyway? I have purchased the regular foam popper bodies before. I had a hard time getting the lure paint to work right...I just dipped it in. I used a red sharpie for the very front...never thought about using it for the whole foam piece. Excellent idea sir. Two thumbs up.

I think that first bass bug was tied on a #1 gold crappie hook, but I failed to notice that the eye of the hook wasn't completely closed and the line just slipped right off. The long shank and thin diameter of the crappie hook makes for a good popper..

Looks like a good foam spider base also. Possibly a punch or dip bait stop for the bottom of a treble hook too.

I finally got the chance to test the earplug bass bug on a local stock tank Friday mid-morning until noon. I am very pleased with this new plug, it holds up very well to bass repeatedly knocking the snot out of it. The earplug foam does get wet but the fly continues to float just fine and the wet fly doesn't seem to affect cast-ability. The eyes stayed put showing that the super glue works extremely well on this kind of foam and doesn't need anything else to protect or cover the plug. Sharpie markers used to color the foam are a real time saver and work very well too. If you want a fast tie "just add water" bass bug this is it! Five minutes from plug to bug

hls, how are you getting the hooks through the foam? I'm having a tough time getting them straight. Or do you think it matters?

I don't think it matters much but I've been squeezing the foam end to end and running the hook through the bottom half and letting the foam expand while pulling at both ends of the foam to cover the hook shank.

Great idea. I found that if you heat the hook up a little with a lighter the ear plug slides right on.
