i havent used kernal corn but ive used pieces of whole corn. it works but sometimes is hard to keep on the hook.. id suggest, i know this may sound weird but a small treble hook and a piece of bread. it is deadly for me..

Oh man. I have caught so many Blue Gill and perch off sweet can corn that it's nearly unreal. I was taught the secret in Kentucky and it deffinatly works here in Texas. A zip lock bag of corn will provide a full day of perch jerking. Upon occassion we have caught cats as well as blacks not many though.

Yep, it works well when they're actively feeding but I've not had much success trying to get them active using corn. Now for Carp, that's another story. wink

I mainly fish bass, but want to teach my 5 year old nephew to fish, can you recommend the proper hook size for perch? Definately gonna take corn!

You bet! Stop by Academy and get some light wire long shank cricket hooks size 8 or 10. These hooks are sooo much easier to dislodge from a small perch then the regular short shanked bait holder style, or even the traditional gold "perch hooks" the everyone sells.

They seem to have difficulty swallowing the long shank cricket hooks like they will the more common short hooks. Mortatility rate on released fish is probably 8 or 10 to 1 better when 5 year olds are doing the perch jerkin. If you want to take it a step farther, take your long nose pliers (which are an absolute must have along tool for this deal)and mash the barbs on the hook down flat. Your nephew will land just as many fish, and you'll spend less time unhooking which means he'll have more time catching.

It takes a little bit of the fun out of it for them when they have to watch you rip the insides out of fish after fish from swallowing those little short hooks. Try and post up some pics on here of the big smiles that always goes along with these adventures. I love seeing kids faces light up from catching some little 3" bluegills. Hope y'all have a memorable day! thumb

The size of hook depends on the size of fish. I usually use #4-#8 long shank hook. Most of the time I tie a #6 hook on, attatch a small split shot 6"-8" above the hook, then a bobber 6"-12" (depending on how deep the fish are) above the split shot. I have caught them on corn but have alot more numbers and sizes with bacon and hot dogs !!

The catfish like the corn and seem to bother it more than the sunfish do. I know sunfish will eat corn...if the catfish will let em. As far as hotdogs...catfish love them. (don't know if sunfish do...all I caught on them is catfish)

I have done excellent using whole kernal corn for bait on sunfish. At times it can be a bit challenging to keep on a hook but most of the time this is not a real issue. Its a real cheap readily available bait

I have also nail more than a few Bass, Catfish and Carp when using this bait too!

I love taking corn for the grandkids to bream fish! For one thing, they catch fish! For another, they bait their own hooks. The two girls will not bait their hook if I have a big container of worms and the boy "overbaits", hanging 5 or 6 nightcrawlers on the hook! eeks

Love the corn! I keep 3 or 4 reserve cans in the truck along with the fishing outfits for myself and the kids at all times. We stopped at Waterloo lake in Denison last week after a trip to Chuckie Cheese. The kids loved it! breakdance

Well, I'm a fan of corn now. I keep a bag in the freezer at work. I take a handful with me to a local pond and catch 30+ bluegill on my lunch break. The water is so clear, I don't even wait for the float to go down. When the yellow disappears, I just lift the rod and pull out the fish. I never fished that way before, lots of fun, cheap, and the bait keeps forever. (Also, no one at work knows I'm going fishing at lunch time).

I just confirmed that one can catch a very large snapping turtle on corn as well. I was fishing a creek, so I couldn't drag him onto the bank. I snapped my 6lb test trying to pull him out.

The only thing you have to work on if you're using corn, is your unhooking speed, because you will have another one on your line as soon as you put it back in the water

I had a can of hominy with me Sat at Lop spillway. Put right where I could see the blue gill come look at it and then pass it up. Even the dink channel cats didn't even look at but they were biting on dough bait.

Yesterday I was fishing for bream and was really surprised when I hooked into what I knew was not a bream, but turned out to be a really nice channel cat. Tasted very good. Almost 2lbs with 1 kernel of coen and a small bream hook. Much fun.

Earlier I said I was going to try hominy. I did last week end. Little bream just looked at it and turned up their noses. I had dumped a bunch of range cubes earlier and then I dumped the can of hominy. This Saturday in the same spot I saw the first carp I have ever seen caught at the Lake of the Pines spillway. I wonder if the combo chum brought a carp or two out of hiding?

Used corn today after reading this post......Awesome! I put it on a size 6 long shank hook and after I figured out how to keep the corn on the hook caught tons of bluegill and perch. What a great way to start a new fishing license year. I think I'm going to get an ultralight rod to make it more interesting.
