I'll be down there the 23rd thru 28th with family and kiddos. We are going to the bay to shark fish on Friday but we would like to take the kids to fish the surf and such on the other days. Maybe we'll see you down there. Have a safe trip.

hey i dont know about 12 inch trout all i have caught troutwise were in the flats topping 25 inches its just beasts down there im talkin water boiling with huge terrified mullet because reds and large trout as wells as jack crevelle are attacking in mixed schools with flounder near structure. This was all this morning the 17th so you shouldnt see much change this month until july comes.

hardheadabuser - I'm taking my wife and young daughters (8yrs and 2 yrs) to Galveston Island for vacation this Friday - next Friday. Any hotspots your recommend we try? I will also do some solo wade fishing without the girls. I'd love to get into a school of trout and redfish. Never caught a fish wadefishing in saltwater - don't get to do much saltwater fishing in Dallas.

Ken

Fishforken,
I'm also DFW-based and have been going to Galveston to fish every summer for the last 12 years. If the conditions are good, be sure to fish the surf in the early morning (dawn 'til 9:00 or so) and at dusk (you can also try in the middle of the day if there is good tidal movement). Use live shrimp under a popping cork. You can find a ton of rigging advice for this on the net. If you can't find live shrimp, try Gulp shrimp, soft plastics or spoons. The key conditions are the height of the waves (too high and you just can't fish) and the wind direction (anything with "west" is bad because it makes the water too sandy). If the surf is gentle and the wind is out of the southeast or east then hit the surf! You can also catch fish off of the public piers - best action for speckled trout will be at night, typically in the early hours of the morning. The kids can probably catch something right on the beach or off a pier by fishing a piece of dead shrimp on the bottom with a small hook (croaker, hardhead, sand trout, or maybe a flounder).

Should have also mentioned that when fishing the surf you want to stand on a sand bar (start with the first bar then after trying several casts go to the second bar) and fish the trough in front of you. Depending on the tide and your height, you usually only need to wade through chest-deep water to get to the second bar. Besides your rod, you will want to carry some equipment with you so you don't have to go back to the beach until you're done fishing: lures, hooks, split shot sinkers, spare popping cork, forceps or pliers to remove hooks and cut line, wade belt and small plastic tackle box to hold all the aforementioned stuff, troll bucket with rope to hold shrimp and landing net is helpful. I strongly recommend a life jacket - besides the obvious reason you can also tie your bucket and net to the life jacket.

Hey! I live in mesquite, and we are heading down there for a week. we leave on the 23rd, so anyone game to fish with us. we rent a beach house on the private part of the beach. and its great, we dont have to deal with the crowd. not to start a war here or anything, but theres no private beaches in texas. theres a thing called the texas open beach act. it protects me and you from anyone closing any beach in the state of texas to the use by people of the gen public. if you think different, your crazy. call may bulff if you like, but i work for a beach front property on the sand and have dealt with this matter in the pass. people ask me about what they can and can't do on the beach in front of our property,135 units and all i can tell them is when they go through my beach gate, i can't tell you what to do,due to the texas open beach act. i love it! some will say different? if you look at all the condos around san luis pass and think their private, your wrong. those are not private beaches. you can't drive it anymore, but you can walk in and do just about anything you want just as long as its legal. as for fishing, i hope you'll do good. one place you can try in the evening or night is the little bridge over the bayou on 61st. i have never fished it, but heard from a few friends that the trout run through there on the out going tide. i always see the birds working that area in the evenings about 6.30 till i leave the pier just across the water from there. also, pick up a map of the galveston bay system at academy. about $10.

luv to fish, where did you'll stay while in galveston?
bayloy guy, we had a blast up until we seen some IDIOT riding a ATV on the beach with a small trailer behind it with a dog in it and the IDIOT flipped the trailer with the dog in it. i called the cops on this IDIOT as we set out in the water watching and the guy is local, because the cops did nothing. seen them talking for about 5 mins and the cop drove off. NO ATV'S on the beach as it is a state highway as per the law.

I just got back and caught a lot of fish at SLP. We had a boat, so not sure if you have a way on water or not. We caught some very nice trout, and lots of them freelining croakers. Lots of folks using shrimp, but you will catch a ton of hard heads if you do. Lots of bait stealers on shrimp. We also used piggys with some success.

ronnie, you see what i have to offer. don't fish much at night and don't use much live bait. from what i read, the live srimp under a cork at night sounds like the thing to do. also the croker. take you some dead srimp and small trible hook and get a few crokers to freeline. i chase redfish most of the time and anything else is a bonus. hope you catch a few. read the reel report at www.galvestoncountydailynews.com
