I'll be coming to galveston from SW Arkansas to spend the week of 6/15. Usually don't fish (family vacation) but last year I saw a guy lose two sharks right off the swim beach. I think I could have landed at least one of em. Thought about bringing my gear and give it a shot but not fond of fishing with swimmers. Any advice on where to go or what to use would be appreciated.
Love the area!

For sharks High Island or San Luis Pass.

Both are plenty far from the majority of swimmers.

SLP would prob. be your best bet, especially on a tidal movement. Stingrays are the best bait because sharks love them and most other fish will leave them alone.

Thanks Bum! Stingrays!? Where in the heck can I get those? I planned on bringing a cast net but will surely need to be up to speed on the rules and regs.

Many baitshops carry frozen rays.. There is a baitshop 5 miles or so from the SLP and she usually has some.. I can never remember the name of the baitshop tho.. Can't miss it as it's on the right of the road, 2 story, wood built. They are 24/7.

Still there is no reason you can't catch a ray on a double drop setup. Fresh bait is better than frozen.

No rules and reds really for a cast net.. Lots of bait around the pass.

Check the message board of www.sanluispass.com - that is the pier's website, and there are some forums on sharkfishing

Y'all im a heck of a freshwater fisherman but there's some gnarly stuff in the gulf if you don't know what your doin. What do you use for bait to catch a ray and how big a one do you use for bait. I think the gent I saw last year was using croakers? Can you get those or something similar with a good castnet?

I'm staying in Crystal Beach the same week. Going off shore out of Freeport with Rig Runners on Tuesday. We have one spot open if interested.

Ok, gettin to be crunch time. Nobody can give advice that will guarantee a novice saltwater fisherman will catch fish. when outsiders come to south Arkansas to fish it's the same. They see all the pictures of fish, but you need a local to tell you specifics. Time of day, what rigging to use, fast or slow, light line or heavy, you name it. You can always tell the outsiders from the locals, and I won't be much different next week. I'll be the one looking like he's from Arkansas. Except I'm gonna be catching fish.........eventually........somehow. I was hoping somebody might save me a little time with some down home tips.
Y'all boys come to Arkansas and Ill show you something. (if the waters right and the weather and the temp and the fish.........)

AR it is hard to tell some one all of the things to do. If i were you i would bring a rod that is light would get some fresh dead shrimp and go to jetties catch some live perch piggy or croaker put in live bait bucket. take a larger rod/popping rig and fish jetties. you can fish bottom also lots of rocks on channel side. just watch people figure out which know what they are doing. good luck bill.

ARC, SLP is good and you wont have to worry about swimmers. The jettys are also good, you can walk out past the swimmers.
You might try Seawolf Park. You can fish the channel side or the pier. You should run into several locals, most are really friendly and would be happy to give you tips. If you have wife and kids with you Seawolf also has several things to keep them entertained. Covered pavilion, used to serve food/drinks, submarine tour... That is where i caught my first shark, 4' black tip. Good Luck

Do not wade SLP without a life jacket. #1 drowning location on the Texas Coast.
