Hey Fellers,

I realize that's a large area, but good food is good reason to travel. So where do the locals go?

Thanks!

I like Fins , Mobey Dicks or the Crazy Cajun in Port A, in rockport try the Boiling Pot. Or in Aransas Pass the Big Fisherman is pretty popular. Don't know about Corpus , I usually just stick to the island.

In Port Aransas: The Pasta Shell or Venetian Hotplate. The VH is very good, but a little pricy. Trout Street is good, but not always consistant. I've had a similar experience at Castaways.

In CC: For BBQ I like Silverados a lot. Somebody already mentioned Waterstreet. There's also Catfish Charlies. For Mexican food try La Playa.

In Rockport there's Alice Faye's for seafood and steak. That's where the locals go. For Mexican food you must go to Los Comales.

In Odem (that's about 17 miles West of CC) there's the Railroad Station. Their onion rings order looks like a cake (it's so big) and their avocado salad with crab meat will astound you. It's a great place for seafood.

I can't even remember the name of the Mexican restaurant I'm going to recommend, but its at the edge of Rockport when you're headed to Aransas Pass, on the LEFT side. It is a little place hidden (slightly) away under some big oaks, dirt parking I believe. It is one of those great places that doesn't look like much from either the outside or inside, but the folks are friendly and the food is great!

Half the time I can't remember the names of where I went, but I learn the locations and go back time after time. This is one of those places. If you speak Spanish they'll understand you perfectly; if you don't; they'll get by, and you'll get your food.

I'm starving now just thinking about it!!

I know those are lousy instructions, but if you find it, you won't regret the search.

There is (was) a small place in downtown Aransas Pass called The Welch Dragon. It's in one of the shopping centers right in DT, near the intersection of Tx35 and Tx361. It might not be there still, which is a shame as we visited there in October, 2007, which was opening weekend. It was up scale dining on the coast.

In rockport/fulton, the boiling pot is a great cajun seafood resturaunt. In aransas pass, the Big Fisherman has excellent food, and in Port Aransas Oceans of seafood is ecxellent. it is near Fishermans Wharf

Lora and I have tried most of the places mentioned, our traditional stop at least one nigh is the Big fisherman.

It has changed up a lot from the first times I ate down there in the early and mid eighties.

Does anyone else remember when there were glass fronted cages with big cats and and others with different types of parrots around the walls of the big dining room?

Big Fisherman in Rockport. If you want to pick up some fresh jumbo shrimp, go to the bait store just pass the Exxon thats on the corner where you turn to go to Goose Island State Park, its on the left before you cross the bay bridge, these things are huge and fresh.

The Big fishermen is a hot spot for car and truck breakins. Ever notice how there is not 1 window in the place where you can see the parking lot? 2 years ago on our last day of vacation we stopped there before heading home like we always did and had everything stolen but what we wore in the restaurant. Marked sheriff car 3 spots over from us did not even slow them down. Management could care less and I will never darken their door step again. As the deputy was doing his report he told me how often it happens there, its a lot to say the least. He also told me that the only camera on the property was the loading dock to catch the employees from stealing food as they had a problem with that.

Its waaaay overrated anyway. Unless you like heaps of grease with very little seafood in the middle. Only eaten there (Big Fisherman) once, so it could have been an off night. Although, I have heard from people who have frequented it that it has fallen off....

Who dat was OK the last time I was there. Charlotte Plummers has gotten just plain nasty. Overcooked fish, undercooked hush puppies, tired old slaw and some of the worst service I have ever had on the coast.

Crab-In between Aransas Pass and Rockport is the best for cooking your fresh catch. They also do many good plates of their own. Gets crowded in the evenings so get there early or don't be in a hurry.

Castaways on Port A is also good with fresh catch, but can be hit or miss as previously mentioned.

Big Fisherman is OK. Good portions and decent food for the price, but nothing too special.

Upscale dining in Rockport should include Latitudes. Excellent with their daily specials.

Breakfast at the Bakery Cafe in Aransas Pass across from the HEB cannot be beat.

The Boiling Pot has been previously mentioned and is very good IF you like a literal boiling pot. They will boil crawfish, shrimp, crab, potatoes, corn, crab, etc all in a pot and then dump it out on your table (with a new, clean paper covering of course). Good for fans of this type of cooking and spicy seafood fans.

Hemingways is another upscale dining place in Rockport that does good steak as well as good seafood. I personally feel their prime steaks are better than their seafood.

I have to agree. Around 15 years ago I ate at the Big Fisherman and it was OK but nothing to write home about. Lot's of fried stuff, I ordered something not fried and it was mediocre at best.

I went back around 5 years ago, ordered the fried because I remembered the baked wasn't so good and I figured that no body could mess up fried shrimp. But they figured out how to do it. Use old freezer burned shrimp from Taiwan or China. That'll do it.

Not going back.

Big Fisherman---Bleagh!!! Ate their ONLY once. Overspiced and undercooked blackened fish. Lukewarm to cool food. Old slimy fishy smelly oysters. Dried out grilled shrimp. I have eaten in almost every restaraunt mentioned in this thread and the Big Fisherman was the absolute worst place I've eaten in the area.

Just FYI.. Dont walk into Hemingways in Rockport, unchanged (casual elegant) and unshowered, after a long day fishing the bays. You'll definately be embarrassed!! I learned the hard way. Our rent cabin owner suggested we go there. We had been on the bays from 5:00 am to 7:00 pm and we just wanted some laid back seafood before we headed to our cabin. Unfortunately, we didnt stay long enough to try the food. Maybe I'll try it again next time.

Just ate at Latitude in Rockport. Family owned, fine dining. Simply fabulous. Don't wear your fishing clothes in there, however...little more dressy than Magellan shirts and shorts. And, you might need to make reservations. +

The last time I went to the Big Fisherman, I asked them if they cleaned the entrails and excrement out of the fried soft shell crabs. The waitress told me they did, so I order them. When I got them, the did not have the intestines removed and cleaned as promised by the waitress. She told me the kitchen made a mistake and resubmitted my order. By the time I get my order again, my wife is almost finished with her plate. Sure enough, then didn't clean the guts and poop out of the soft shelled crabs belly. I gave up. I'll never eat there again. If that's the way that they prepare their soft shelled crabs, I understand. I just wouldn't have ordered them. That was such a bad experience, I'll never go back.

Los Comales is the best we've found here. If you like spicy, try their stuffed eggplant. Not so spicy, fried stuffed avocado. We tried Crazy Cajun on the island, and I knew when they didn't have an LSU banner on the wall they couldn't be Cajuns. I don't like my gumbo or etoufee in paper bowls. Plus, both foods tasted nearly the same. I just can't rate them very high. Boiling pot; food is OK if you like the atmosphere. Seems pricey to me. A friend was served a sponge crab in there. BTW, they have a good business; I can look out my window and see the Boiling Pot. Big Fisherman; terrible food and service. I'll never eat there again. I've heard good things about Moon Dog's on the water here at Fulton Harbor; never eaten there myself. Ate at Charlotte Plummer's a couple weeks ago. Had the fried soft shell crab and it was great. Tried Hu Dats in Fulton also, food was great, but I prefer a little cleaner restaurant. JMHO

I just walked by Moondog's this morning. I sure wish they would clean that area up over there. They repair the yachts in the yard next door. There is some type of fluid all over the ground running on the side of the street toward Moondog's place (from the dumpster in the yacht yard). Wonder what it is? They do a lot of painting at the yacht yard.

Mike, the Big Fisherman has really gone downhill in the last 11 months. We moved down here in September 07, and food and service was reasonably good. In my opinion, it is plain sorry now.

Dude. I just sold my place at Rockport that we owned since 1973. We were eating at the Big Fisherman back before he burned down and that was when he had all the big lion/tigers/monkeys and other animals in window looking at you. We even went to bat for him to reopen, and signed the petition, to get him back in business. (Some of the locals fought against him reopening because of the animals, apparently the fire department didn't know what to do with a tiger or lion during the fire> So a few animals got injured) It has been going down the tubes for the past year and it was like family tradition to eat there. Every time we came down, we ate there, Fact is, 2 years ago, on my wifes birthday, we drove to Rockport just to eat there and drove back the same day. Well, That Ain't Gona Happen No More.......

For the last few years I had been hearing how great the Big Fisherman was. So, last weekend I stopped in and tried it.

The food was about the worst seafood I've ever eaten. Service was fair at best as well. I will never eat there again.

Places I normally eat:

-Boiling Pot (mainly for the atmosphere. food is good, too.)
-Los Comales
-Latitudes
-Crab'N

Here's one not to go to: China A by Ace Hardware on Hwy 35. We wanted Chinese a couple evenings ago. Was that place a dud. We had the buffet and most of the food was not hot. Surely the ice cream is good. Wrong. It tasted like it had melted and been re-frozen.

Re: China A

We rolled in there just before close, they didn't have a whole lot of items left. They asked me what I would like, I named off 4 or 5 things thinking they would bring out the tubs for everyone to eat. No, even better, they brought our table 5 plates stacked as high as could be with whatever we wanted. You may have caught them on an off day, but our service was great. Granted they wanted us the heck out of there so they could go home, but there were also 3-4 other groups there eating as well.

Regarding China A,my main concern was the food out in the buffet area was not hot. IIRC, most foods should be maintained at 140* to be safe for consumption.
