Went down to spot I like on Lone Star Lake this evening, rain was just letting up, I sat in truck for a while listening to Neil Young for a while, got tired of Winnepeg and cast out a popper, a couple casts to get things going, then I started making sharp hard strips & big "Pops", all of a sudden it was like someone flushed a toilet under my popper...my reel is 3 7/8 dia. & I estimate this fish to be 20+ " probably between 4 & 5 lbs..biggest of the year on a flyrod for sure. I hope I never get used to this.

Very nice pig of a LMB thumb I just love it when they flare open the mouth and gills under a surface fly. You are right just like flushing the white throne. clap

If you ever get used to that then it's time to reconsider a lot of things smile

That is a lovely fish, I bet the fight was a grand one as well!

Oh I forgot to mention that your choice in music sure brings back memories for this ol' gal. I used to be a fanatic about rock n' roll. I still listen to classic rock, but I like other stuff too like Kenny Wayne Sheppard. He is fantastic!

A fish that big might be too much for me...I dunno but I'd sure like to find out! I caught a nice bass one day on my five wt...nothing like yours of course...but still a good fish. That was the biggest thing I guess I have caught on mine so far. Now I have an 8wt, so I should be able to deal with a decent sized bass.
If I could catch a 16 inch bass I'd be thrilled! (on my fly rod)

rbpwrd240,
that's a nice fish badassbaits caught, but I'm sure there are plenty of areas alot closer to you that have nice bass like that. You'd be surprise where you can find fish like that. Just gotta spend time on the water. I caught a nice one like that earlier this spring on a golf course pond here in the metroplex, of all places.

Kelkay, just fish early enough, fish a variety of places, and you should easily catch something bigger than 16". I've caught lots and lots of bass around 16" - 19" around Lavon, those areas I showed you.

i will second what ccabel said...the fish i caught are okay, but there are nicer ones in lotsa places...ponds are great, rivers & streams, etc...you get the idea...bass are a popular sport fish because they are found in so many places from canada to mexico and everywhere in between..if you spend enough time fishing for them , you will catch them, they will eat just about anything that fits in their mouth ... so go catch some LMB !!!

I just have the bug for big bass on the fly. Thanx for the encouragment. I want to get out to choke but without a boat it is hard.

no flotation can be a drag. Have you looked into float tubes or pontoons? Very economical and will get you out on the water side of that good fishing structure.

Well there is no ponds around close by that I know the people...so I cannot just go to private ponds. I did ask on the pond forum, and got no reply. I have been to the river nearby a few times. It is not really a safe place for me to go by myself. (also no restrooms out there!) If I knew of a better place to fish from the bank at the river, I would certainly already be there. I considered going to one later today. I am trying to wrack my brain to figure out a good place to fish for the contest. I have caught about as many varieties as I am able to. I went to Bob Sandlin State Park yesterday evening. I went to Lake O The Pines dam again today, but didn't catch anything new. It was too hot out there today anyway for me. I am considering going somewhere later today, but WHERE...I don't know.

I t's not the size of the fish in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the fish...this one made a hard run of almost 1.38", I explained to my wife that if I had a new 1 or 2 weight it would have been a more equal fight, I pretty much horsed him in on a 3 wt.

That pic reminds me of my killer catch today. I caught a bass right over 5 inches long...on a lure that looked pretty big for such a tiny bass. Still I counted it in the contest. I tried flies, worms, hot dogs, and corn. A turtle got my worm. I have no idea what kept eating my hot dogs. I was trying to get a carp/buffalo or another kind of catfish. So far I have stayed one hour from home, and I guess I am pretty much the only bank angler in the contest. Anyway, nice fish there bad..............I can laugh cause mine is about the same size. Oh well...still better than getting skunked!!!!!! (not counting turtles)

I actually caught my new personal best largemouth yesterday on my 5wt and a brown bead head woolly bugger in a 3 acre farm pond. Is there anything as productive as a brown or olive woolly bugger? My only regret is that I was alone and didn't bring my cell phone with the camera for fear of dunking it. All in all it was a very good fish for me and great fun watching that rod bend fully double.

Kelkay, you might try going to a couple of the local feedstores and putting a notice on the bulletin board and or asking the owner if they know anyone who would let a responsible person fish in their ponds. You could always sweeten the pot by offering to give the cleaned fish that you caught to the pond owner. Most ranchers don't mind anglers, but can't stand people who don't know how to leave a gate open or closed depending on how it was found. Just an idea.

I don't carry a scale, but my SWAG (Scientific Wild-Assed Guess)was around 3 lbs. It did its best to bend my 5wt double.

Maybe a black one, or a chartruese one with a red head, or........ laugh

The only thing I don't like about them is they're not topwater.

I tie them on big bass size hooks too. Just a great all-around productive fly. If they ever pass a law that says you can carry only one fly for all your fishing, mine will be a woolly bugger.

GREAT bass, by the way! You know you have a big one hooks when it just pulls you deeper and doesn't jump. Bet those fights were exciting.

I really don't mean to keep adding to this thread, but I've caught some noteworthy fish lately (small & large)...this one felt (to quote John Fogerty) "Like Deja vu all over again", I caught it in the same spot as last Monday and its just about the same size(a little smaller, but still solid 4+ lbs)...I am having some fun this year.

Very nice consistent fishing there badassbaits! I am trying to hunt a new place to fish..if it isn't TOO HOT. Today at 9am I decided I did not want to fish today. It was already hot to me by then. Maybe this rain will cool things off. If not it will be one humid son of a gun tomorrow!

I went to Lavon this morning before the storms rolled in, in my float tube. Caught 2 nice bass, one was 18", and the other was 20", and a smaller 14" bass too, all on a white popper. Those 2 nice bass gave me a heck of a fight on my 5wt.

the small one, yes...
the first big one by the rocks close to the marina, and the other one back in the cove around some brush.

I'm embarrassed to say that Lavon is closer to me than any other reservoir and I know less about it than most bodies of water.

A floating type device is a must for most of Lavon that I've seen. There are some wading and bank fishing somewhere I'd think. Just don't know where.

You be afoot right?

All of my (successful) fishing has been on the south end of the lake with Christian in his boat. launch at the Avalon Park boat ramp, work that cove, then out on the lake, down the dam face working the rip rap. There is a quasi-island out from the dam here that is probably underwater right now that is good structure for whites and hybrids. Then over by the power plant.

There are likely alot of other prime locations, those are all I know of.

Hey badarsebaits,

I've never fished Tickey Creek, but have fished a small cove right south of there and have caught some nice bass. Hey Robin remember that morning I caught a nice bass there, and then some sandbass started blowing up.. yes, that cove....

But anyway, that area should be good too. Lavon has some nice fish, but sometimes you have to cover a good amount of water to find them. But as you would expect, fish early and around cover.

Also fish rocky areas. Those produce well too.

I do remember that well. But I had no idea at all where we were other than "on Lavon" smile

Keeping the thread going on here...

I'm in E. Texas this weekend, at the inlaws place at Holly Lake Ranch. Fishing was surprisingly pretty good this morning. I didn't do very good last year when I fished this lake in the summer, but today was pretty good. Caught 5 bass on a yellow popper on my 4wt, biggest around 2#, and another 2# on a brown and white-rubber-legged eelworm streamer
