i was fly fishing a part of the red river thats very shallow. when i hooked a weird looking fish. it was long. blackish shiny wierd fish. jumped a couple times. i thought it was nessy. it took a long [censored] slow run on my 6wt before spitting the hook. this fish made no turns. 2 jumps when i set the hook and it just took off really slow. like it was lazy. it had pretty long fins. did not bring it in to see what it was. but it was really shiny, really dark.

i posted here because.... the brains hang out in the rough forum. lhd, starless, brett, scott, i need your knowledge

Hmm...size?

Black or Bigmouth Buffalo, and Shovelnose Sturgeon come to mind. All of which sometimes jump, especially buffs. And the slow, lazy run sounds very much like a buffalo, rather then a sturgeon.

Of course if it was very small, could have also been a blue sucker, but I don't think they get anywhere near big enough to confuse you with Nessy lol.

I'd say a buffalo, possibly a black or bigmouth.

There are shovelnose sturgeon there, but they are terribly rare.

There is a good population of blue sucker there though.

Yes, they have Sturgeon in the Red River below Texoma, Shovelnose Sturgeon, one of the fish I suggested.

That fish is a Blue Sucker, also one of the fish I suggested hehe.

Yep; my only contribution to this discussion was to find the article that goes with the picture. wink

Somebody entered one with the txfishes contest this year that they caught in the mouth on a crankbait. I am sure it was a lucky snag since they mentioned catching six others hooked in different places. I saw them in the pools when not releasing water on a couple trips up there and tried my best to get one to take a hook. I put three or four types of flys in front of them with no interest. I then tried sight fishing corn and a bit of nightcrawler on their nose and again no interest. My best guess is they were in resting mode and normally feed only in the fast water or perhaps they were in spawning mode and not eating.

I am curious Artan, was yours in one of the pools or was it in fast water when it took your fly? What fly?

I also hooked and lost one carpsucker up there this year that took a bit of worm. Complete surprise when I hooked it as I was catching sunfish at the time to use as bait for the blue cats and stripers. Other carpsuckers I saw this year up there just like the blue suckers had no interest in any fly or bait and were very skittish.

Nightcrawler hehe. Suckers love nightcrawlers. I've caught more suckers are various species over the years on that then just about anything else, at least until I started catching buffalo on corn lol.
