is it possible that the bull gills are hanging out in deep water? can i use a little grub and fish off the bottom? kinda like bass fishing except blue gill. work the grub really slow on the bottom? im not new to blue gill fishing. but i have yet to catch a bull gill. and i know a couple areas around me where there are some big blue gills hanging out.

It has NOT been my experience so far this spring/summer to find any bluegills deep. In fact, with the full moon of june fast approaching, they will be VERY SHALLOW again in the next few days! A small grub or a tube jig will be deadly on them! I have caught a ton of big bull 'gills so far, and ALL on the small tube jig.

Yes you can find them deep just like you would bass in the summer. The only difference is you can also find them "very" shallow too.
I've caught some of my biggests gills from deep water. It's just a different kind of fishing in terms of bluegills.

You can find them deep, you can find them shallow....if you are fishing during the day in full sun, deep fishing techniques are more likely to find the big gills...but if fishing low light conditions very late, very early, or cloudy/rainy days you can find big gills in water a couple of feet deep.

Found them in LESS THAN 2 FT of water tonight! They were a max of 3-6 ft from the bank!

I was "pre-fishing" the upcoming full moon.

Caught 7 bull bluegills with the smallest being in the 7 inch range, biggest at a tad over 10 inches. Caught one Green sunfish in the 8 inch range, one tilapia about 10 inches, and 3 LMB's; 1 in the 2 lb range, 1 in the 3-4 lb range, and one well over 5 lbs, but definitely less than 6 lbs!

Fished from 9:40 PM, after i got off work, to about 10:30 PM.

Used my UL gear, with 6 lb Trilene XL, and used a TriColor MicroTube jig, on a 1/32 nd oz UNPAINTED jig head. The Tricolor had a red top, green main body and a yellow tail!

The 'gills are coming up to fan more beds for the full moon, and they don't waste any time inhaling the TriColor! Neither do the bass!

Life is Good!
