I will be visiting my Aunt's beach house this summer with my family. It is located on Crystal Beach near Galveston. I am an avid freshwater fisherman but I have zero clue about surf fishing. I need to know what bait to use, how to rig it, what I could expect to catch, etc. There are also some lagoons/ponds behind the house that appear to be some sort of drainage system. I know there are fish in there because I have seen them break water and I have seen others fishing there. I again have no clue what kind of fish are in these lagoons/ponds or how to go about catching them. I don't even know if they are fresh or salt water. Any advice would be much appreciated. I'm really looking forward to catching some new breeds of fish but I need help.

Stop at an Academy on the way down, there's one on 45 on the north side of League City. Pick some lures from the saltwater isle. Ask for help if you need suggestions.

Hit the beachfront on calm mornings at sunrise, and wade out to waste deep and cast until you catch something, shouldn't take too long. Watch for others fishing and see what they're using/catching. Trout will be done biting around 10:00 a.m. in that water. The calmer and greener the water the better.

There's some bait shops along the intercoastal of the Bolivar that should be able to point you in the right direction for lures/live bait too. If you don't have an aerator ready when you buy the bait stick with lures or dead bait. I like to fish there with live shrimp under a popping cork but you'll need an aerator in your vehicle to get the bait and get it to the water alive. I've limited out with trout many many times doing that in Crystal Beach.

If the winds blowing from the south or southwest too strong for calm water in Crystal Beach, drive down the beach toward the ferry and the water will calm down as you get closer to the Jetty.

Like you ninja, I don't have a clue about fishing salty water. Although I do OK on millwood lake (sw Arkansas) with the big Florida strain sows; you need to try it here!
I'm going down next week and plan to bring some gear. Don't know what I'll be cathing, but fish are fish. I just want to feel the drag slip a little. Wife will get to sleep late a couple mornings..... kids can go with me.
