With no more fishing at Lavon Dam, the Spillway, and Rowlett Creek, dad and I decided to go out to Lake Texoma last weekend. It has been 10 years since our last trip to Texoma. Dad and I left Friday morning and started fishing on the Texas side around 6:00. We instantly started hitting strippers, and hybrids. Dad was using a spoon, and I was using a top water. The action was so good Friday we went back Saturday and Sunday, and my nephew was dying to get in on the action. We were averaging fish between 18 to 24 inches. (not a bad weekend) I am going back this weekend hopefully for more action.

I am assuming the dam is not releasing water right now? i wonder how safe it is to put a kayak in there and just drift.

Anyone seen it out there before?

Head north on highway 75, take exit 72 follow the denisom dam sign. You can fish the dam or the lake, if youre going to fish the texas side, you dont need a diffenrt license,if you fish okl you do.

Just remember guys, Texoma has diff. rules on striper/hybrids. On the lake, you can have 10, but only 2 over 20". Behind the dam, you can only have 5 and there's no size limit. No culling is allowed in either place (i.e. no catching and then releasing them later to keep a bigger one).

Thanks! I might have to go get a bait bucket! fill it up and hit the lake =). Do they stripers bite when down there when there is a slack current? or does it need to be running?

Question: If you park your car on the OK side and launch a kayak and are in the middle while fishing then load back up on the OK side, do you need an OK license?

The reason Im asking is it looks like there is a beach on the OK side you can launch froma and the texas side looks way to rocky to get a kayak in the water

In the river, you will need an OK license. You're only okay with a TX license if you fish from the TX bank. In the water is considered OK I believe, and that includes wading as well.

YEAP, If youre standing in the water no matter if youre in the texas or okl side, you need okl license. Okl ownes the water rights.

the air boats were cathing fish on what like water is flowing. nice ones too.

One of these days I'm going to finally make it up there. Anyone in the Ft. Worth area want to split expenses for a trip up there?

Bfail, if you fish the river below the dam past the 1000' cable or from your kayak you will need an Oklahoma fishing license. If you fish from your kayak in the lake the $12.50 Lake Texoma license is the way to go. It is not good below the dam.

Does anyone know if the OK license runs 12 months from when you buy it, or is it like the Texas one that goes September-August?

I'm definitely gong to take my yak up there sometime this summer.

Oklahoma license is $42.00 for non-residents and expires December 31th so it is a fair value to buy one now. You can do a lot of fishing between now and the end of December.

I believe Dave's carries them.

The line isn't the 1000' cable. It's Shawnee Creek.

Scroll down to Lower Red River (below Lake Texoma), it has a graphic there showing it.

Still if you are wading in the water while fishing you need an Oklahoma license. Most fly fishermen wade while fishing therefore would need an Oklahoma license.

I have wondered just how strict they are enforcing that law. I have seen many fishermen have to walk a fish down the bank to land it when the floodgates are open. At some point they wade in the river either at the bottom of the wall or to go around a small tree/bush that is in the water.

Well...seeing as how they now have actual coordinates for the boundary on the website above, I doubt they care if you're just gettin' your feet wet. Seems like (can't remember who I heard it from, may have been from a GW) if you're wading from the TX bank and weren't WAY out there (e.g. only 10 yards out) , they left ya alone. But since they've got GPS coordinates up there, they likely enforce it pretty strictly if you cross the line.

When I was there two weeks ago, I stop by the dam to check it out. there was two guys wading, they got to close to the discharge area and were told to get out by somebody who worked there. they were also told that if they were going to be in the water period, they needed okl license. They both went in from the texas side, I really dont think that if have one foot on land and other in the water, that youre goin to get in troble.
