I just got back from Port Aransas and I have a new rig for all you hardcore redfish guys that fish GULP!Shrimp. I know the standard way to fish them is on a jighead of somekind but I've found a better way. Since I'm a hardcore bass fisherman I just happened to have a Stanley Frog Hook (weighted 1/8 oz) on one of my bass rods. Rather than retie with ajighead like I'd normally do down there, I left it on and hooked the GULP! shrimp on there, Texas rigged. This rig is COMPLETELY weedless, it also falls horizontally at about the same rate as a shrimp swims. You can let it fall in grass and potholes and fish it when it gets windy and all that floating grass gets everywhere. I hooked several good redfish on it sightcasting when I was down there. I was using a Powertackle rod and with a Shimano reel and 45 lb braid. You might want to use a stouter rod with this than the standard trout or red rod because you need to drive that Texas Rigged hook home. If you don't like hanging grass on your jighead and picking it off everycast, I would highly recommend this rig. Another thing I have been doing this year for big trout is taking a 6" YUM money minnow or similar swimbait and slowly swimming it just under the water with the same hook (looks just like a Mullet)... talk about an awesome bite. I'm telling you that frog hook with the GULP! shrimp is the way to fish it! Give it a try the next time your down there.

Bullet you hit the nail on the head and drove ii home with your post. The Money Minnow works!!! I started using it in saltwater a few months. Its killer on big trout and believe it or not big flounder as well. I have a feeling swim baits like the "Money" are going to be big in saltwater once saltwater guys see the action on these.

I thought bass hit this thing hard... a trout absolutely comes unglued. We have to find a way to have those things last longer... the plastic just wasn't made for saltwater teeth. I went through several while I was down there, I was having fun but my wallet wasn't. lol

Bullet, are you talking about the single hook with a spring in the front, and weight at the begining of the bend on the hook??

Like this one??

If so, what size did you use and where did you get them from??? I was only able to find the kind above and a double hook.

Shep, that's not the exact one i use but it should work just fine. Same design concept, that one might even work better because the weight is set back some on the hookshank. I was using it in a 3/0. Any bass tackle store like Academy or Bass Pro carries them. Look for Zoom, Stanley, Oldham's, or Mr. Blitz.
