I usually don't post on this section. Here are several
baits that I/we use to catch brim.

Flyrod - a Montana Stone Nymph - # 10 hook
in black with a bright green/chart (chest).
A couple turns of lead wire on the shank
will make it sink about the right speed.
Use a surface fly over the spawning beds
first and then use the nymph.

We need to catch brim fast to be used to
catch Hybrid stripers. A guy at Walmart told
us to use a # 14 gold treble trout hook with
yellow Berkley Powerbait Crappie nuggets.
The slim bobbers don't even get a chance
to get still. Really simple. No messy worms
or crickets to chase.

I think I have a few stone nymphs, I'll try weighing them down and give it a whirl. Thanks for the suggestion. I really need to fly fish now that they are spawning and aggressive.

I figure a treble hook and berkley nibbles would work great. I may try that, especially if I am keeping them to eat.

I agree that fishing with crickets and worms is the hard way. Lately I've fished with cocktail shrimp w/ rock salt and some fish attractant on a #6 matzuo circle hook on a fluorocarbon leader (walmart special). I split up a 2 dollar bag in about 5 or 6 smaller baggies so although you think shrimp might be expensive, it ends up being a lot of bait for a little money. Granted, shrimp need to stay frozen until you are ready to use. Berkley baits are hard to beat for convenience, and they work great.

Ask at Bass Pro to look at the Sabiki Rigs in the saltwater section, I think. Get the little ones. Drop it in a known concentration of sunfish and catch multiples.

hey guys these are some great suggestions. I have been taking my kayak out and just tooling around the banks at my local lake and have caught a few perch on small crappie jigs but i was wondering what other artificial baits work well? I know there are a bunch of perch in the area because if you throw a worm under a bobber they will snatch it up. Most of the fish in this area are not that big maybe 4 to 7 inches or so. I am just fishing for fun so i like the challenge of artificial baits. thanks for the help.

Beetle Spins work well on the larger bream.

Nothing will ever beat a little aberdeen hook with a piece of night crawler on it. They might be messy, but I've never seen breem in a pond and feeding that wouldn't hit it.

Here's a suggestion for you....try a Bead Head prince nymph and/or a Bead Head zug bug(I usually use a #8 for larger BG). With the bead head you don't need the lead wire and those nymphs are real BG killers for me on a fly rod...especially large BG.

Meal worms on a long shank #8 Mustad offset hook. Deadly.

1/32 oz jighead with any type of 1 inch crawdad plastic.

Worms, hot dog weenies, bologna, brisket, chicken, shrimp, bread, brightly colored styrofoam!

If they're there they eat everything.

You are preaching to the choir as far as i am concerned, CrappieKeith. Got one honey hole down here that's got em the size of yours in the pics. Been wearing them out for going on 2 months now.

I release all of those gills.Hate cleaning them and I know they keep gettin bigger.Now specs on the other hand hit the live well.

Been releasing 9/10th's of my 'gills as well. Did keep a few for a fish fry the other day, and truth be told, i catch so many crappie in the winter around here up in the creeks, i throw most of them back as well. But do keep freezer well stocked.

i use them two work great till the get alll tangled up then i just thro them away.
i use alittle peice of worm on each hook works great for like 2 bucks for 8 hooks

I use a drop shot rig for Bluegills, I attach a #6 or 8 bait holder hook about 8 inches up the line, with a about a buckshot size lead weight at the end of the line. I use a worm or a small 1 inch plastic grub for bait.

I use dark colored plastic grubs, once I have found the fish to keep the small fish off. You'll be able to tell the difference in strikes. This works well for me.
