Any one still see these lizards ?

I had these as pets when I was a panhandle kid. We called them " Mountain Boomers " They could run on two legs, and bite the krap out of you when you first caught them. They would tame very quickly and be content to sit on your shoulder. MO

Never have seen that kind before, but I'm not from the panhandle. Cool looking lizard. Cool pic.

I tink that is a Collard lizard. Winner! another rarity these days. used to see them all the time when I was a kid. Mostly in arizona, though, when we were on vacation @ lake powell.

The collared lizard is what it is and is a very fun lizard indeed. My wife and I were hiking in Inks Lake State Park in the hill country where there's a lot of them when we ran across a large specimen. I caught it and admired it for a bit and when it calmed down I gently released it. Well, he wanted revenge I guess and turned quickly and bit the snot out of my hand. After letting go he then bit my shoe and would not let go for a long time. Pretty funny.
Here's a nice little definition of it...
The Collared Lizard (Crotaphytus collaris) is a North American lizard that can be up to a foot (30 cm) long, with a large head and powerful jaws. They are well known for the ability to run on their hind legs, looking like small dinosaurs. The collared lizard is the "state reptile" of the United States state of Oklahoma, where it is known as the Mountain Boomer. The name "collared lizard" comes from the lizards' distinct coloration, which includes bands of black around the neck and shoulders that look like a collar. It is a member of the collared lizard family.

I seem to remember it would take about a week of handling
until they would stop biting you every time you picked them
up. I kept several in a makeshift terrarium, I would also
catch the little brown anoles, but they would dissapear.
I thought they were escaping. One day I found my biggest
Mountain Boomer had an inch of tail hanging from his mouth.
So to paraphrase the old chinese proverb , big lizard eat
little lizard.

I have a picture of one hanging up here in my office. We ran across one out by Breckenridge a couple years ago and I went "snap happy" with the digital camera. The only one I have ever seen. I'll try to post some pics as soon as I find the wire to my camera.
