The old timers always told me you could drive a stake in the ground and scrub a brick across the top of it and it would draw the worms out of the ground. They werent kidding. My two daughters and i were messing around in my grandmas back yard. I saw a big crawler scooting along. They got interested in finding more so i decided to try the stake trick out. It works, works real good. The worms cnat stand the vibration and come shooting out of the ground. We had a coffee can half full in about 30 minutes and used them to catch some red ears the next morning at lake athens. Good Times

When I was a youngster and still living in the northern Virgina area we would water the lawn and than we would use a transformer from an old Lionel train set and run one lead to a steel rod driven about a foot into the ground and run the other lead to the other side of the yard and crank up the juice. Those crawlers couldn't get out of the ground fast enough.

My Grandpa used to set this up for me when I was a little guy!
It sure does work! Really well too!

Never heard this, going to have to try it. Does the ground have to be soft or wet? You know how hard the dry ground is here in Texas.

The reason they come out of the ground isn't because they can't stand the vibrations. It's because it immitates thunder. Worms will drown if they are caught under ground in a rainstorm. We used to drag a subwoofer out of the living room and into the yard and play music on the stereo. Had the same effect. More useless information for ya.

If you live near one and can get access, go to a golf course after a good rain at night. You can pick up all the nightcrawlers you could ever want. We lived on a golf course up in Maryland for a few years and for those few years I always had nightcrawlers in the frig.

We used to play old 8 tracks of Elvis singing..."You ain't nothin' but a hound dog". Those worms would wiggle and jiggle right into our pork and bean cans with the lid bent back! Even pulled a little dirt over themselves in the process! grin

But of course, "Bye Bye Love" by The Everly Brothers did not produce a cotton pickin' thing! grin

LOL! Good one Parker!

No, they don't drown! They just go to their Aqua Lung stage and segment their way to the shallow end of the pool! grin

If your in DFW.
After this rain stops, this would be the time to find the little dirt munchers.

I resisted when this topic first came up. Since it is back...

If you're gonna try to catch worms, make sure you use very very very small hooks. Do they make size 56 hooks? That might work for large night-crawlers.

Oh yeah. Don't use anything larger than 1/64 lb line.

This has been a good topic,
nothing like saving drowning worms for bait,.........

then drown them anyway.

We used to grunt worms in Florida but I rubbed a machete across the top of the stake which produced a higher pitched grunt that would rout out the fast wigglers. Funny thing to see, Folks squatted down all in the bushes making grunting noises at first light.
