I am planning to make a trip mid June to the Port Aransas area to target stingrays. How are the concentrations of rays in the shallows in June? A co-worker of mine fishes the area and he told me that Shamrock Cove is loaded with rays. Any other areas that have good stingray populations. Just trying to help all y'all wade fisherman out smile

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Seems that everyone wants to know why I'm after them. confused A coworker of mine fishes the area for reds and specks (as I do in South LA) and he told me about the stingray problem over in PA. So, a buddy of mine and I decided that we would hook up the boat, grab the bows and do our best to help y'all out with your ray problem. My buddy loves to eat rays also. So if you guys have any places that are shallow, relatively clean water, and loaded with rays, some pointers would be greatly appreciated. Not looking for reds or specks, (plenty back home) just hoping to shoot some of those pesky rays and make it safer for all the wade fisherman wink Thanks

Justification of LA being one of the least educated states in the nation! Keep your a** back in LA and find some rays over there! Killing anything off isn't good for the environment. People just need to buy some Ray-Boots.

Also...
Where did you get the idea that there is a PROBLEM with the sting ray population? Just because people are getting hit, doesn't justify a problem!

Hey buddy I'm not really sure if that was called for. I was simply asking about the stingray population in the area. I have plenty of education (six years of college, 2 degrees, and a 100K+ salary to show for it)

Second, apparently you took my post a little too seriously. Of course I know you don't have a real problem with rays, hence the winking smiley face. And I promise you, I was not intending on killing off your stingray population by making a one night bowfishing trip and spending a few days on the beach. I have no interest in ray boots, just enjoying some pan fried ray that my fishing partner cooks up. I was just trying to bring a little humor into my post. So thank you very much for your kind post. If anyone else would like to offer any friendly advice, it would be much appreciated.

Alright....

But if you kill them just make sure you eat them. And don't throw them back with their barbs chopped off. wink

Apologies Lousianian... My inner Texan pride got a hold of me and just can't stand when people just kill something for fun. Especially in an area that won't effect them.

Curious about how to clean them - I know they have taste & texture similar to scallops, but the few times I've tried to clean big rays, all I got was a big mess and some scraps.

Thank you - looks like the problem I had was removing the wings first, then attempting to clean those.

Alot of Surf Shark Anglers use them for shark bait so you may be able to sell some to anglers or to the baitshop if you don't want to keep them all.

Back side of Port A...where you can wade. You'll find more than you want.

i never seem to see the larger ones when wading shallow, but i always seem to catch them. one day i was using a arti and i caught a 4 foot stingray by the tail. i fought that sucker for 45 minutes, cut off the barb and let him go. but the little ones are like mice in a corn field, EVERYWHERE.

My inner Texan pride tells me to let him kill all those boogers that he wants. After getting hit by one, I don't like them and he is more than welcome to come over here and shoot my share as well. laugh

I know a guy who will buy them from ya, his name is Tim at Big Game Tackle, Its right across the street from the IGA on Alister Rd in Port A. Its a buddy of mine that owns it, and we are always in-need of shark baits.

Can you legally sell them without a commercial fishing license? Just curious.

Mike, I used to spend a lot of time bowfishing that area. You'll have a geat time. I always had the best luck on flats that were adjacent to a channel. The flats close to the Lydia Ann channel were some of my favorite haunts. You'll see plenty of rays and a lot of other critters also. Bowfishing that area made me aware of just how many rays there are out there and increased my caution while wadefishing during the day. Welcome.
