Absolutely tore em up! My neighbor picked a bad day not to go with me. Canyon was on fire today. I boated at least 30 fish and I left em biting at 11:00. I damn near went through an entire 18-pack of worms. They were just hammering em. I started out throwing top water and caught a few including a pretty nice smallies. After that I stuck with the worm and fished in 10-20 feet of water off main lake points. The fish were very aggressive today. I had just hooked a pretty nice 3.5 pounder and was playing him to the boat, the entire time there was a HUGE bass fighting him for the worm all the way to the boat until I lifted my fish out of the water. I wish I would have hooked that big sucker instead!! water temps are just over 75 degrees...it felt pretty good to dive in and cool off.

Nice, was gonna head out there tonight but can't make it. Nice trip. Definitely looks like you were on the main lake in the pics. Wish I was out there right now, weather is perfect today.

ok, I will tell you this. I went out yesterday and forgot my tackle box. UHG! My neighbor had his but I didn't like his worms and apparently neither did the fish(only caught about 5. I'm not sure what his were but they were tougher, had less action and I just wasn't too confident using them. I use culprit worms...texas rigged....red shad....just like the one in the center of the screen here: http://www.culprit.com/html/culpritworm.htmlalways had good luck with those

I was out there on Saturday and we had a great day as well. Fishing must be turning on. Our big fish was close to 6 and we had a few nice chunks as well. We fished much deeper though (24-55ft) and caught nothing but LMB's.

Hendo,
I haven't really fished Canyon that often although I live right down the road from it. I know you don't want to give away your exact locations but are there better spots to fish than others? Any info you are willing to share would be appreciated. I usually fish Calavares and gas is killing me.
Thanks.

I have been having the best luck fishing dropoffs on the main lake points as of late. 10-25 feet of water. I usually try at least one new spot every time I go out there...weather permitting. The wind usually plays a big role in where you can fish out there. Yesterday it was dead calm so I could fish anywhere and hit a few places I have never been able to before.
If you get out there real early and you are seeing topwater action, I'd try a topwater bait along the rocks and stickups. There is a lot of hidden timber right underneath the surface out there too along the rock ledges. Give those a try.
I've been fishing this lake for about 5 years now and am just starting to figure it out a little, so be patient. I absolutely hated Canyon lake when I 1st started fishing it. Hated it!

There are definately spots that produce better than others. You can catch fish all over the lake, but all of our quality fish have come from the same area over the years. There are some spots where we'll catch mostly small mouth and guads, then others where you'll catch almost nothing but blacks. Fish the ledges out there, and you'll catch em.

Hendo is right on the money with the wind factor. I normally fish three spots, only because the wind will not allow any main lake action. I started fishing out there last summer when I moved, and now it is one of my favorite lakes. Very finicky fish, but when you find a pattern its a piece of cake. Summer months it will get very tough though.

Don't mean to hijack the thread while the Hawgs are hot, but I've been thinking about doing some evening/night trips out here for crappie. I've heard through some coworkers that Canyon can be really productive around the Crane's Mill area. I've even bought the green submersible lights! Any thoughts on the subject since Crane's Mill Park is just a few minutes away from me? Thanks in advance, guys. Steven

i have the lights and have tried it a couple of times. i didn't have much luck. I was probably in the wrong spot. I'd be willing to give it another go though. Crappie is good eats.

Yeah, time to do some research on crappie fishing. Cats are probably so spread out, it would be hard to find a honey hole. Stripers have a consumption ban, so no fun in catching those. I use to hit some ponds when I lived in the New England area and I would rip up the crappie with Rooster Tails, but something tells me Canyon will be a whole different ball game. Do whites bite all year round? I know they produce a good creel during the run, but I was curious if you can still come across a school or hole throughout the year. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. Steven

you can still catch the whites, but nothing like when the run is on. Nothing wrong with catching those big stripers and releasing em.

Hendo,
If you ever need a fishing partner on Canyon, send me a PM.
I know very little about Canyon and would love to see someone actually catch a fish out there.
I appreciate your reports.

New to the site. I have read for a while, but thought I should try to give back. Second year on Canyon Lake and I am finally finding a few fish.
Sun morning braved the crowd. I caught 6 scattered in several places, but the most consitent bite was in about 15 - 20 of water. Came off the lake at 10.
Mon morning took a buddy from Houston and we caught 7 lmb and 1 small mouth. All off of points or close to one. Same thing they were 15 20 deep.
Both days, they were very tenative, don't know if it was because all the traffic or they just weren't feeding hard.
I am still in desperate need of some ways to establish a pattern out here. I can run around and scratch out one here and one there, but are there any spots where they concentrate? I am not asking for anyone's spots, but a little strategy guidance would be great.
Thanks

Just for the record, it is a consumption ADVISORY on stripers, not a BAN. You can still eat them, but we are being advised to limit our consumption of the fish, especially pregnant women and children. They are CERTAINLY still fun to catch!!
