This morning I was in area that was covered up in bait fish They were hitting the water like crazy all around the boat - I don't think I've ever seen anything like. This went on for about 30 minutes. We threw everything, and never even got a bite. There were several other boats in the area, and I didn't see anyone catch anything.

It got me to thinking - can too many bait fish be a bad thing? Do they just ignore what we throw because they have too much of the real thing?

match the hatch... were there birds on the bank? sounds like a shad spawn was happening.

or go total opposite. a great spinnerbait builder once said a pink spinnerbait would draw strikes in this type situation.

the good ole shad spawn...I honestly do believe if you are around too much bait the bite can be tough

Last year during the Summer, there were areas just covered up with baitfish all over. At those time, I could not buy a bite to save my life. But then again, I was limiting my options during those times with strickly fishing soft plastics (won't do that again).

I encountered that some problem the other night when I was fishing at Lake Lewisville. My fish finder was going nuts and I threw a number of different things and nothing was working. If anyone has any suggestions, please post. Thanks smile

Exactly! I like pink or red spinnerbaits during the shad spawn. I have litterally gone from zero bites with a shad imitation to load the boat when I switched to red.

Interesting! Thanks Eric.

I usually start flipping in that case...to me they aren't feeding, but you bump them on the head with a soft plastic bait and they might eat.

It's bad when you search for a cove or pocket that has bait fish only to find them slapping, flipping, and doing the "monkey dance" and no bass around to hit them or bust them up.
